Kashmiri embroidery is known for its refinement: flowing paisleys, chinar leaves and vines, worked finely enough to look almost painted. Two Kashmiri techniques suit bridal wear especially well, tilla and aari, and our own karigars do both. A Kashmiri lehenga is a beautiful choice for a bride who wants elegance over sheer weight.
Tilla and aari: what they are
Tilla
Tilla is embroidery in metallic thread, usually gold or silver, laid on the surface of the fabric and held down with fine stitches. It gives a smooth, gleaming line that outlines motifs beautifully. Tilla is traditionally used on pherans and shawls; on a lehenga it makes rich borders and motifs that catch the light without the bulk of heavy zardozi.
Aari
Aari is chain-stitch embroidery done with a fine hook. It creates flowing lines and filled shapes in thread, ideal for detailed floral patterns, vines and even lettering. See bridal blouse with groom name for aari name work.
Classic Kashmiri motifs
Paisley (badam): the best-known Kashmiri motif.
Chinar leaves: the great trees of the Kashmir valley.
Flowering vines and bouquets, often in a jaal across the fabric.
Birds among branches.
Borders of repeating flowers framing the hem and dupatta.
Colours
Deep base, gold tilla: maroon, emerald, navy or black with gold. Regal, and perfect for a winter or night wedding.
Pastel base, silver tilla: powder blue, blush or ivory. Soft and elegant for day.
Multicolour aari flowers on a plain base, for the mehndi or sangeet.
Making it bridal
A tilla border on the lehenga hem and dupatta, with aari jaal filling the skirt.
A tilla jacket or cape over a lehenga, which also keeps you warm at a December wedding.
Tilla plus zardozi for brides who want more shine on the wedding day. See zardozi lehenga for bride.
Names in aari along the dupatta border, in English, Hindi or Urdu. See nikah dupatta with groom name and couple name embroidery.
