Phulkari means "flower work". It is the embroidery of Punjab, traditionally stitched by the women of a family for a daughter's wedding, in bright silk floss on a plain base so dense that the flowers cover the fabric. A phulkari lehenga brings that joy and that family meaning into a modern wedding outfit. Our own karigars do phulkari work.
What makes phulkari phulkari
Darning stitch in long, shiny floss, worked so the pattern catches the light.
Geometric flowers and diamonds, rather than realistic ones.
Bold colour: magenta, orange, yellow, green and red, often on a deep base.
Bagh ("garden"): when the work covers almost the whole surface.
Phulkari for each function
Jaggo
The night of dancing with the decorated pot. A phulkari lehenga or a phulkari dupatta over a plain lehenga is the classic jaggo look: bright, easy to move in, and full of Punjabi spirit.
Mehndi
Phulkari's colours suit the mehndi perfectly. Keep the sleeves short or three-quarter, out of the way of the henna.
Wedding
For the wedding itself, phulkari can be combined with gold zari or gota to make it bridal: a red lehenga with a phulkari border, or a heavy phulkari dupatta over a zardozi lehenga.
The bride's family
Phulkari dupattas for the mother, sisters and aunts tie the whole family together in photos. See custom bridesmaid dresses.
Ways to use phulkari
Full phulkari lehenga: the whole skirt in bagh-style work.
Phulkari border on a plain or lightly embroidered skirt.
Phulkari dupatta over a lehenga in a matching colour.
Phulkari blouse with a plain skirt.
Phulkari with your names worked into the pattern. See couple name embroidery.
Bring a family phulkari
If your family has an old phulkari, it can be honoured in your outfit: its motifs recreated in a new lehenga, or a piece of it set into your dupatta. Read recreate mother's wedding lehenga.
How to order
