Recreate Your Mother's Wedding Lehenga: Rework It or Make It New

Regal Amethyst Lehenga from House of Daisy

Some brides grow up looking at one photograph: their mother on her wedding day. Wearing that lehenga, or a new one that recreates it, is one of the most moving choices you can make. At House of Daisy we do both: we rework the original lehenga, or we recreate it as a new lehenga inspired by it.

Option 1: Rework the original

Your mother's actual lehenga is restored and updated so it fits you and feels current, while staying the same piece she wore.

  • Refit: the skirt and blouse are altered to your measurements, or a new blouse is made.

  • Refresh: loose embroidery is secured, worn borders replaced, a new lining added.

  • Update: a new dupatta, a modern blouse, added latkans or a new border.

  • Personalise: both your names and hers, or the two wedding dates, added to the dupatta. See couple name embroidery.

Best when the fabric is in good condition and you want to wear the lehenga.

Option 2: Recreate it new

A new lehenga is made from your mother's photos and the original piece, keeping its colour, shape and motifs, made to your measurements in new fabric.

  • The original stays safe and untouched for the next generation.

  • You can make it heavier or lighter, change the blouse, or add your own story.

  • A piece of the original, such as a border or a motif, can be set into the new lehenga as a link between them.

Best when the fabric is fragile, too small to alter, or when your mother wants to keep hers as it is.

How to decide

  • Condition: our designer checks the fabric, the embroidery and the stitching, and tells you honestly what it can take.

  • Fit: how much the lehenga needs to change for you.

  • Your mother's wishes: some mothers want their piece worn again; others want it kept.

  • Your style: how close to the original you want to be.

What to bring

  • The lehenga itself, if you have it, with its dupatta and blouse.

  • Wedding photos, as many angles as you can find.

  • Any notes on its story: where it was bought or made, what it means to the family.

Only have a saree?

Many mothers wore a saree. That can become a lehenga too. Read old saree to lehenga.

How it works

You see the plan and the price before anything is cut or altered. Payment is in full in advance. The work is done by our own karigars, and the designer gives you a delivery date once the plan is approved. Reworking an old piece can take longer if the fabric needs careful handling, so start early. Thinking about the next generation? Read heirloom lehenga.
