Some brides choose their lehenga for one day. Others choose it for the next generation too. An heirloom lehenga is made to be worn again, years from now, by a daughter, a niece or a granddaughter, and to carry the family's story with it. A few choices made at the design stage make a big difference to how well it lasts.
Choices that help a lehenga last
Timeless colours. Reds, maroons, deep greens, ivory and gold age gracefully; very trend-led shades can date.
Strong base fabric. Raw silk and velvet hold heavy embroidery well over time; very fine nets are more delicate.
Classic embroidery. Zardozi, dabka and thread work have been worn for generations. Read zardozi lehenga for bride.
A quality lining to protect the inside of the embroidery.
Build in room to alter
The next bride won't be your size. Ask our designer to leave extra seam allowance in the skirt and blouse, so the lehenga can be let out or taken in later. A separate blouse is easier to remake than a skirt.
Put the family into it
Names and dates: your wedding date on the dupatta corner, with space left for the next bride's. See couple name embroidery.
A piece of the past: a border from your mother's or grandmother's saree set into the new lehenga. Read old saree to lehenga.
Meaningful motifs: the lotus for new beginnings, elephants for good fortune. See lotus motif lehenga.
Your story: see love story lehenga.
Storing it so it lasts
Clean it professionally after the wedding, before storing. Stains set over time.
Wrap it in soft cotton (an old mulmul dupatta or a cotton sheet), never plastic, so it can breathe.
Fold with tissue paper between the layers, and refold along different lines every few months so the creases don't crack the embroidery.
Keep it dry and dark, away from damp walls and sunlight.
Air it now and then in the shade.
Don't hang heavy lehengas for long periods; the weight pulls the waistband.
Wearing it again
When the next bride wears it, it can be refitted, refreshed with a new blouse or dupatta, or reworked. Read recreate mother's wedding lehenga and bridal lehenga reuse ideas.
