Chikankari is the embroidery of Lucknow: fine, mostly white thread stitched on sheer fabric, with shadow work that shows through from the back like a soft watermark. It is known for elegance rather than shine, which makes it perfect for brides who want something graceful and light. Our own karigars do chikankari, and it can be made fully bridal.
What makes chikankari special
Shadow work (bakhiya): stitched on the back of sheer fabric, so the motif glows through.
Tiny knots (phanda) and raised stitches (murri) that give texture.
Jaali: open, lace-like work created by easing threads apart.
Floral motifs: vines, flowers and leaves, usually in a delicate jaal.
Making chikankari bridal
Mukaish: tiny metal studs or flattened wire added among the stitches for sparkle.
Gota and zari borders to give the hem and dupatta weight and shine.
Sequins and pearls scattered through the jaal.
Coloured thread, or tone-on-tone chikan on coloured fabric.
Layered skirts in georgette or organza, so the flare carries the delicate work.
Colours
White or ivory chikankari with gold: classic and elegant, beautiful for a day wedding or a reception.
Pastels: mint, blush, powder blue and lilac, lovely for mehndi and haldi.
Red or maroon chikankari: tone-on-tone work with gold mukaish, for a bride who wants chikan on her wedding day itself.
Chikankari for each function
Haldi and mehndi: light chikankari lehengas and shararas in pastel. See customised haldi outfit and customised sharara set.
Day wedding: ivory chikankari with gold borders.
Reception: a chikankari lehenga or saree with mukaish for evening sparkle.
Family: chikankari suits and anarkalis for the bride's mother and sisters. See customised anarkali suit.
Make it personal
Chikan's fine stitch is ideal for small hidden details: initials in the jaal, a date on the dupatta corner. See couple name embroidery.
