A lehenga blouse back design with dori is one of the most practical choices a bride can make: the cord laces or ties the blouse closed, so the fit can be eased or tightened on the day, and the tassels at the ends add a finishing touch that shows even under a dupatta. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, we make dori backs on made-to-order blouses, and the blouse on any ready lehenga from our showroom can be made with one too.
Talk to a designer about your blouse back
What exactly is a dori back?
A dori is a cord, usually made of fabric, silk thread or a zari-wrapped thread. On a blouse back it does one of three jobs:
- Ties the opening: two strings meet at the top of an open back and tie in a bow.
- Laces the back: the cord runs through loops or eyelets in a criss-cross, like a corset.
- Finishes a hooked back: the blouse closes with hooks, and a dori is added at the neck or waist for looks and a little adjustment.
Each one feels slightly unlike the others to wear, so it is worth deciding which you want before the sketch.
Why do brides love being able to adjust the fit?
Your wedding is a long day. You may be up early for the bridal look, then sitting through rituals, then eating at last, then dancing. A blouse that felt perfect at the final trial can feel a little tight after lunch or a little loose by the evening. A laced or tied back lets someone ease or firm the fit in a minute, without a tailor. Brides who are travelling for a destination wedding, or whose fittings are spaced out, often choose a dori for exactly this reason.
Which dori openings look best on a bridal blouse?
- Single tie at the neck: a deep U or V back held by one bow at the top. Light and pretty, and easy with a heavy dupatta.
- Two ties, neck and waist: more hold for a lower back, and a balanced look.
- Full lacing from neck to hem: the most adjustable and the most structured. It suits a corset-style or princess-seam blouse.
- Window with a dori across: a cut-out panel with cords crossing it, for a modern bride who still wants support.
How do I choose the tassel ends?
The ends of the dori, called latkans, hang down your back and swing when you walk. They are often the only part of the back seen in pheras photos when the dupatta is on your head, so they deserve attention.
- Match the work on the lehenga. Gota tassels for a gota patti lehenga, mirror drops for mirror work, zardozi or dabka balls for a zardozi lehenga.
- Think about length. Latkans that stop at the waist are easy to sit in; very long ones look dramatic but catch on chairs.
- Consider something personal. Initials, a small date or a motif can be embroidered on the latkans. See our guide to names and dates embroidered on your lehenga.
Is a dori back comfortable for a long ceremony?
Usually, yes, if it is made well. Ask for a soft cord that will not dig in, a smooth lining under the lacing, and a modesty panel behind a criss-cross so the fabric under it is covered. If you will lean back against a chair for long stretches, keep knots and heavy tassels off the spine. At your trial, sit down, raise your arms and bend forward, and tell us if anything rubs. Changes needed at the trial are made before delivery. More in our guide to fittings and the final trial.
Who ties it on the day?
Someone other than you. Choose one person, a sister or a friend, and have them practise at the final trial so they know how tight feels right. Knot the bow twice and tuck the ends if you are worried about it slipping during the pheras.
Made to order or ready?
For a made-to-order lehenga, you choose the neckline, sleeves, back and cut one by one, and the designer shares a sketch for your approval before anything is made. You see an embroidery sample before the whole piece is made. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. If you would rather start with a ready piece, browse our bridal lehengas; the blouse on any of them can be made to your choice, dori back included. Order a made-to-order bridal lehenga at least 8 weeks before the wedding.
Our showroom is Shop 226A, 2nd Floor, DT Mega Mall, Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1, Sector 28, Gurugram, open every day from 11 AM to 9 PM. Bridal consultations are by appointment, and walk-ins are welcome to see pieces.
Questions brides ask
Will a dori back loosen during the day?
A well-tied double knot holds. Have one person practise tying it at your final trial so it is right on the day.
Can I have a dori and hooks together?
Yes. Many brides choose hooks for the main closure and a dori for looks and a little adjustment.
Can the latkans match my lehenga's embroidery?
Yes. Latkans can be made in the same craft as the lehenga, such as gota, mirror work or zardozi.
Can I get a dori back on a ready lehenga?
Yes. On any ready lehenga from our showroom, the blouse can be made to your choice, including the back.
