Peacock Theme Bridal Lehenga: Ideas, Colours and Meaning

Deep Sapphire Lehenga from House of Daisy

The peacock has been part of Indian bridal wear for centuries. It stands for beauty, love and celebration, it dances when the rains come, and its feather is the sign of Krishna. A peacock theme bridal lehenga uses that one bird in many ways, from a single pair facing each other on the dupatta to a skirt covered in fanned-out feathers.

Peacock motif styles

  • A pair of peacocks facing each other: the classic symbol of a couple. Lovely on the dupatta corners or the blouse back.

  • The dancing peacock with its tail open, as a large motif on the kalis.

  • Feathers (mor pankh) scattered across the skirt, or lined up as a border.

  • Peacocks in a garden, among trees and flowers, for a full theme. See theme lehenga for wedding.

  • Peacocks with Radha and Krishna, for a devotional theme. Read Radha Krishna theme lehenga.

Colours for a peacock theme

  • Peacock blue and teal, the obvious choice and still the most striking.

  • Emerald and bottle green, with blue and gold feathers.

  • Red or maroon, with peacocks in gold zardozi and touches of teal thread. Traditional and bridal.

  • Ivory or pastel, with peacocks in soft blue, green and gold, for a day wedding.

Techniques

  • Zardozi and dabka for a regal, raised peacock in gold.

  • Resham thread to show every colour in the feather.

  • Sequins and beads to make the tail shimmer.

  • Mirror work for the eyes of the feathers, especially for mehndi.

Make it yours

A pair of peacocks can carry your initials between them, or the feathers can hide your wedding date in the border. Read couple name embroidery and love story lehenga.
