"I want to wear my mom's wedding saree." Many brides carry that wish for years before the wedding is even planned. The saree has been folded in a trunk or a cupboard since the day your mother wore it, and now it might be your turn. Whether you want to wear it as it is, rework it into a lehenga or dupatta, or have something new made in its spirit, the first step is the same: let someone look at it honestly.
When you wear your mom's wedding saree
When you wear your mom's wedding saree, you carry her day into yours. For brides abroad it is also a way to bring home to a wedding far from India, and a quiet way to include your mother even if she cannot travel. It can be worn for the main ceremony, a pre-wedding function, the reception, or simply for a portrait with her. Talk to her first: some mothers want it worn exactly as it was, others love the idea of it becoming something new.
First, an honest look at the saree
Old silk and zari change with time. Before you decide anything, our designer looks at the saree, in person at our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram, or on a video call if it is with you, and tells you honestly what can be saved. Things the designer checks:
Weak or split silk, especially along old fold lines.
Tarnished zari, which may look dull but can still be sound.
Stains and spots, and whether they sit in the body, the pallu or the border.
How much usable length there is, which decides what it can become.
A badly damaged saree may not be wearable as a whole, though parts of it, such as the border or the pallu, may still be used. Nothing is promised until the designer has seen it.
Restore it and wear it as it is
We restore and strengthen old sarees so they can be worn again. A new blouse, made to your measurements, makes it yours: a modern neckline, a different sleeve, perhaps your names stitched inside. See custom bridal blouse design, and our guide to heirloom saree restoration.
Rework it into something new
If you would rather wear a lehenga, or the saree cannot be worn whole, we can rework it:
Into a lehenga: the saree becomes the skirt, with a new blouse and dupatta. Read convert silk saree into lehenga.
Into a dupatta: worn over a new lehenga, so her saree frames your face.
Into a border: her border stitched onto your new lehenga skirt.
Into a blouse: a piece of her pallu becomes your blouse.
Reworking means cutting, so agree it with your mother and family first. Some families want the saree kept whole for the next generation.
Mom wedding saree recreation
Sometimes the original is too fragile, or your mother wants to keep it untouched. That is where mom wedding saree recreation comes in. From her wedding photographs and the saree itself, our designer plans a new lehenga in the same colours, border style and spirit, and our karigars embroider it fresh. Recreating mom's wedding saree this way leaves the original safe in the cupboard. We also recreate a mother's lehenga new; see recreate your mother's wedding lehenga. If the saree was your grandmother's, read grandmother saree for wedding.
How to order from abroad
Send a message to WhatsApp +91 92896 79666. On a video call or WhatsApp video, show the designer the saree in good light: the body, the pallu, the border, any damage, and a few of your mother's wedding photographs if you have them. From there to design approval, everything runs on video. The price is shown before anything is cut, and payment is in full in advance.
If the saree is with family in India, a relative can bring it to our store. If it is with you abroad, the designer will talk through the options; check your country's customs rules before sending anything. The designer guides you through your measurements on a video call, and if you travel to India before the wedding, you can have a trial at the store with alterations. We leave extra margin in the seams for a tailor near you. You get a delivery date once the design is approved. We ship worldwide, and you pay your own country's customs duty and import taxes when the parcel arrives.
