A grandmother saree for wedding wear is one of the most loved ways to carry family into the day. For a bride abroad, that saree may still be folded in a trunk in India, or packed in a suitcase her mother brought over years ago. Whether it is nani ki saree or dadi ki saree, our designer looks at it first, tells you honestly what can be saved, and then helps you decide how to wear it.
Why brides choose a grandmother's saree
It is rarely about the fabric alone. A grandmother's saree holds a wedding, a festival, a photograph on the wall at home. Wearing it on your own day links three generations in one frame. For brides who live far from India, it is also a way of bringing the family home into a wedding in Toronto, London or Sydney.
Memory: the saree she wore at her own wedding, or at a family wedding you remember from childhood.
Weave: older silks and zari borders were often woven in ways that are hard to find today.
Blessing: many families see it as the elder's blessing, worn rather than spoken.
First, check what condition it is in
An old grandmother saree may have weak patches, faded folds, tarnished zari or small holes from years in storage. None of this means it cannot be worn. Before you plan a design, look at it in daylight and note:
Fold lines where the silk has thinned or split.
The border and pallu, which usually carry the strongest work.
Stains, moth damage or tears, and where they sit on the saree.
Whether the zari has darkened or come loose.
Send clear photos and a short video on WhatsApp. Our designer will say honestly what can be saved and what cannot. We restore and strengthen old sarees before anything else is done, so the fabric can take a full day of wear. Read more in our guide to heirloom saree restoration.
Ways to wear it on the day
As it is, draped
If the saree is strong enough after restoration, you can wear it draped for the pheras, the nikah, the Anand Karaj or the reception. A new blouse made to your measurements makes an old drape feel like your own.
Reworked into a lehenga
Many silk sarees have enough length to become a lehenga skirt, with the border running along the hem. If the fabric falls short, the skirt can be built out with new matching panels. See how this works in converting a silk saree into a lehenga.
As a dupatta or border
If only part of the saree is strong, the pallu can become a dupatta, or the border can trim a new lehenga. You still wear a piece of her saree without putting weight on the weak sections.
As a blouse
The richest part of the saree can be cut into a blouse, worn with a new lehenga in a matching or contrast colour. This works well when the body of the saree is too fragile but the pallu is in good shape.
Adding your own story to it
Our karigars can embroider your grandmother's name, her wedding date beside yours, or a small motif from her home town into the new parts of the outfit. Some brides add a line in Hindi, Gurmukhi or Urdu along the dupatta edge. If you choose sacred words, confirm the exact text and spelling with a family elder or priest first. Ideas from wearing your mom's wedding saree work just as well for a nani or dadi saree.
Caring for it before the wedding
Store it folded in soft muslin, not plastic, and refold it along new lines now and then so the old creases do not split.
Keep it away from perfume, damp cupboards and anything that can rub against the zari.
Do not wash, starch or iron an old silk at home before the designer has seen it.
If a relative is bringing it to you, ask them to carry it flat in a cloth bag rather than squashed in a suitcase corner.
How to order from abroad
Start with a video call or WhatsApp video. Show us the saree, share family photos and tell us which function it is for: message WhatsApp +91 92896 79666. If the saree is in India, a relative can bring it to our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram; if it is with you abroad, our designer talks you through the next step on the call. The designer suggests a design and shows you the price before anything is cut, and payment is in full in advance. Our designer guides you through your measurements on video. If you are coming to India before the wedding, you can have a trial at the Gurgaon store when you land, with alterations, and we leave extra margin in the seams so a tailor near you can make final adjustments. We ship worldwide, and you pay your own country's customs duty and import taxes when the parcel arrives. The designer gives you a delivery date once the design is approved, so start early.
