A gown in traditional style keeps a western silhouette, such as an A-line, a column or an off-shoulder cut, and finishes it the Indian way with a zari border, a dupatta and a few embroidered details. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, this is one of the most requested made-to-order ideas from women who love a sleek gown but have family events where a little tradition is expected.
Why not just choose an anarkali?
Because the outline is different. An anarkali flares from high on the body and reads traditional from any distance. A western-cut gown follows the body more closely, or falls straight, and reads modern. Giving that modern cut a traditional finish lets you keep the shape you feel confident in while still looking right at a festival or family dinner.
Which western cuts take a traditional finish best?
- A-line: the easiest. A wide zari or gota border at the hem frames it beautifully.
- Column or straight gown: works with a vertical band of embroidery down the front or a worked neckline.
- Off-shoulder: a zari-edged neckline turns it from cocktail to festive; a dupatta adds cover.
- Mermaid: a traditional border at the flare and a light dupatta soften its drama.
Mermaid, off-shoulder and ball gown cuts can all be made to order with our hand-work.
Where should the traditional details go?
The rule is restraint. One or two focal points look intentional; five look confused. Good combinations:
- a zari border at the hem plus embroidered cuffs;
- a worked neckline plus a dupatta with a matching border;
- a plain gown with a heavily embroidered dupatta doing all the talking;
- a belt of gota or zardozi at the waist with a clean skirt below.
How do I wear the dupatta with a western cut?
A dupatta changes a gown's mood more than anything else. Over one shoulder and falling down the back, it looks graceful and modern. Draped across the front from shoulder to opposite hip, it looks more traditional. Pinned at both shoulders like a cape, it gives cover with movement. For a sleek gown, choose a lighter dupatta in georgette, net or organza so it does not swallow the silhouette.
Which fabrics work best?
Silk, satin-finish silks, georgette and crepe hold a western cut well and give embroidery a clean ground. Velvet gives a regal winter version. Any base fabric is possible for made-to-order pieces, and you choose the colour from our fabric shade cards, with many shades available to try on ready pieces at the showroom.
How is it made?
Your first design consultation is free, in the showroom or on a video call; read how the design consultation works. Bring pictures of the cut you love and the traditional details you want. Your designer shares a sketch for your approval, then an embroidery sample before the whole piece is made. Changes needed at the trial are made before delivery. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. Order a party or festive gown 3 to 4 weeks ahead. The designer quotes after the sketch, based on fabric, embroidery and hours of work.
Prefer something ready? Our gown collection and Indo-western collection include gowns with Indian detailing, and a cape or dupatta can be added to a ready gown, usually within about a week.

Common questions
Will a dupatta look odd with an off-shoulder gown?
Not if it is light. A sheer dupatta draped from one arm or pinned at the back keeps the neckline visible while adding a traditional touch.
Can you add a zari border to a ready gown?
Ready gowns can be altered in length, waist and sleeves, and a cape or dupatta can be added. For a new border, ask at the showroom what is possible on that piece.
Do you make mermaid gowns with Indian embroidery?
Yes. Mermaid, off-shoulder and ball gown cuts can be made to order with our hand-work.
How early should I order?
Order 3 to 4 weeks ahead. If your event is less than three weeks away, we suggest ready pieces.
Western gown ko traditional kaise banayein?
Ek zari border, ek matching dupatta aur thoda kaam neckline par. Bas itna kaafi hai, zyada kaam se look bhaari ho jaata hai.
