A godh bharai lehenga is comfortable when three things are right: a drawstring or adjustable waist, a lighter skirt with no stiff can-can pushing outwards, and a choli long enough that you are not tugging at it every time you sit. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, we plan lehengas for mothers-to-be around exactly those three points, either by adjusting a ready piece or by making one to order.
Can I really wear a lehenga at my godh bharai?
Yes, and many mothers-to-be love to. A lehenga feels celebratory, and for some it is a lovely echo of their wedding look. The concern is usually the waistband, because a traditional lehenga is tied firmly at the waist. That is easy to solve. The skirt can sit above the bump on a soft drawstring, or have an adjustable panel or side ties, so it holds securely without pressing.
For anything about your health, please ask your doctor. We look after comfort and fit.
What should the waist of a maternity lehenga be like?
There are three good options, and the designer will help you pick at the consultation:
- Drawstring waist. The simplest. It ties above the bump and loosens as you need.
- Adjustable side panel. A hidden panel with ties or hooks that lets out over the coming weeks.
- Soft elastic band with a tie. Comfortable for a long day, especially if you will sit on the floor.
Any made-to-order outfit can be made maternity-friendly like this, with an adjustable waist, a longer choli and side ties.
Why does a lighter skirt matter?
A heavy, densely embroidered skirt with layers of can-can looks grand, but it drags at the waist and makes sitting and standing harder. For a godh bharai, choose a skirt with work concentrated on the border and a lighter body. Fabrics such as georgette, chanderi, crepe and soft silk give a beautiful fall without the bulk. If you choose a ready lehenga, the can-can is detachable, and most mothers-to-be prefer to leave it off.
Embroidery placed near the hem still shows clearly in seated photographs, because the skirt spreads around you.
How long should the choli be?
Longer than you would usually wear. A choli that ends a few inches lower, or a peplum or short-kurti style top, keeps you covered when you sit and lean, and side ties let it ease out. Some mothers-to-be prefer a long kurta over a lehenga skirt instead of a choli, which gives the lehenga look with even more room. Padding or cups can be added to any blouse if you would like them.
Should I wear a dupatta?
For the rituals, a light dupatta is useful, because in many families the mother-to-be's head is covered during the blessings. Customs vary by family and community, so ask your elders. A net or organza dupatta with a gota patti border looks lovely and adds almost nothing to carry. If you plan to pin it, we can add hidden loops so the pins do not damage the fabric.
Ready or made to order?
Ready lehengas come in a range of sizes, and other sizes are made to measure. They can be altered at the showroom in length, waist and flare, usually within about a week, and the blouse can be made to your choice. Browse our crop-top lehengas, which come with a dupatta you can leave off, for lighter options.
A made-to-order lehenga is planned entirely around comfort from the start. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier, with mirror work, gota patti, chikankari, zardozi, dabka or aari, and tested zari only. Order 3 to 4 weeks before the function. If it is under 3 weeks away, we will suggest ready pieces, because we do not take rush made-to-order work. We keep it to one showroom fitting, then work from measurements you send, and the lehenga can be altered again later as the bump grows or after delivery.
