A godh bharai saree feels comfortable when it is soft, light at the waist and draped so the pleats sit above the bump rather than pressing on it, which is why pre-draped sarees and supple silks are the two choices we suggest most. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, you can see both kinds in the showroom, and we show you how to drape the one you choose before you take it home.
Why do so many mothers-to-be choose a saree?
For many families, a saree is the outfit that feels most traditional for the godh bharai, and it photographs with real grace when you are seated for the rituals. It also adjusts naturally. There is no fixed waist size, so the same saree can be draped a little higher or looser as the bump grows. The only things to get right are the fabric and the way it is tucked.
What is a pre-draped saree, and why does it help?
A pre-draped or ready-to-wear saree has its pleats stitched in place, so you wrap it, fasten it and you are done. For a godh bharai this has two big advantages. First, there is no tight tucking of a bundle of pleats at the waist. Second, the drape stays put while you sit, stand and bend for blessings, so nobody needs to fix it every half hour.
You can browse our ready-to-wear sarees before you visit. If you have bought a saree from us and would like it pre-draped, we can stitch it into a ready-to-wear saree. We pre-drape only sarees bought from House of Daisy.
Which silks feel soft enough for a long ritual?
Not every silk is equal on a long day. Stiff, heavy silks hold a crisp shape but can feel warm and press at the waist. For a godh bharai, look for silks that fall softly:
- Soft silk and silk blends. They drape easily and sit lightly at the waist.
- Crepe silk. Fluid, with a gentle sheen, and it rarely creases when you sit.
- Organza with a soft border. Airy and festive for a morning function.
- Georgette with zari or gota work. Light and forgiving, a good choice for first-time saree wearers.
Hold the fabric up and let it fall. If it moves easily in your hand, it will feel easy on you.
How should the drape sit above the bump?
Ask for the petticoat or waistband to sit above the bump, with the pleats tucked lightly rather than tightly, and the pallu left a little longer so it can cover your head if your family's rituals call for it. Customs vary by family and community, so check with your elders. Pin the pallu at the shoulder only, so you can adjust it easily when you sit. Flat footwear helps you move with confidence.
When you buy a saree from us, we show you how to drape it, so you can practise at home before the day. For anything about your health, please ask your doctor.
What about the blouse?
A ready saree from us comes with an unstitched blouse piece, which we stitch to your measurements on request, usually in about a week. For a godh bharai, ask for a slightly longer blouse with a little ease at the back, or side ties, so it stays comfortable as you grow. Padding or cups can be added to any blouse if you would like them.
Can I have a godh bharai saree made to order?
Yes. A made-to-order saree is planned around you: the fabric, a colour from our shade cards, the border, the blouse, and embroidery such as gota patti, zardozi or mirror work in tested zari. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier, and a matching petticoat is stitched for made-to-order sarees. Any made-to-order outfit can be made maternity-friendly. Order 3 to 4 weeks ahead. If the function is under 3 weeks away, we will suggest ready sarees instead, because we do not take rush made-to-order work.
Our only showroom is at Shop 226A, 2nd Floor, DT Mega Mall, Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1, Sector 28, Gurugram, open every day from 11 AM to 9 PM. Walk-ins are welcome, and consultations are by appointment. Our guide to visiting the showroom has directions and tips.

Yeh har parivaar ki rasam par depend karta hai. Ghar ke bado se pooch lijiye, aur pallu thoda lamba rakhiye.
