Bride Outfit for Mehndi Function: Suits, Gowns and Lehengas

Mint Green and Peach Orange Skirt-Jacket Set from House of Daisy

A bride outfit for mehndi function has a job no other outfit has: it must look joyful while you sit for hours with henna drying on your hands and feet. You cannot adjust a dupatta, hold up a skirt or fix a slipping strap. So a good mehndi outfit is colourful, light and built for stillness. Here is how to choose yours, and the options we make.

What the mehndi asks of your outfit

  • Sleeves that stay out of the way: short, elbow-length or cap sleeves, or a sleeve with a slit. Long, tight sleeves will smudge the henna on your wrists.

  • No fiddly fastening: you will need help to dress and undress, so plan a side zip or hooks someone else can manage easily.

  • A pinned dupatta: pin it securely before the henna starts, or skip it for this function.

  • Comfort sitting down: you may sit on a low seat or a cushion for a long time. A skirt or kurta with room at the hip and a soft waistband is kinder than a fitted gown.

  • Henna-safe colours: henna paste stains. Pale ivory or white can show marks, so many brides choose colour.

Colours and embroidery

Mehndi is the most colourful function of the week. Greens, from mint and pista to deep parrot green, are a long-standing favourite. Yellow, marigold, orange, rani pink, fuchsia and turquoise all look happy in daylight and under fairy lights. Multicolour works well too, especially with:

  • Gota patti, which is light and shines softly.

  • Mirror work, which catches the light around you.

  • Phulkari, bright and joyful. See our post on the phulkari lehenga for wedding functions.

  • Floral thread work, perhaps with your initials hidden in a flower.

The options we make

A bridal suit for mehndi

A bridal suit for mehndi is comfortable and traditional: a straight or A-line kurta with palazzo, sharara or churidar, and a light dupatta. A floor-length anarkali gives you the twirl without the weight of a lehenga. Our customised anarkali suit post shows how flare and length are planned.

Sharara and gharara

A short kurta with a flared sharara is a mehndi classic. It is easy to sit in, easy to dance in afterwards, and the flare looks lovely in photographs. See our customised sharara set post.

A bridal gown for mehndi

A bridal gown for mehndi works if it is flowing, not fitted: a georgette or organza gown with an empire or high waist, short sleeves and a soft skirt. Keep embellishment light so you are comfortable sitting.

A light lehenga or skirt and jacket set

A crop-top lehenga in net or georgette, or a skirt with a short embroidered jacket, gives you a lehenga feel with much less weight. The jacket can come off once the henna is dry.

How the mehndi outfit fits the full wardrobe

The mehndi often falls the day before the wedding, or on the same day as the sangeet. If they are on the same day, you may want one outfit that works for both, or a quick change. A lehenga with two blouses, or a sharara with a jacket you add later, can do both jobs.
