Bridal Lehenga from India: Why Brides Abroad Still Choose It

Red Crop Top Lehenga from House of Daisy

For a bride who lives abroad, a bridal lehenga from India often feels like the one part of the wedding that should come from home. It might be the place her parents grew up, or simply the place where the embroidery she loves is still worked by the people who know it. This post looks at what India gives you that is hard to find elsewhere, and how to plan a whole wedding wardrobe from there without flying back and forth.

The crafts are still alive here

Many of the embroideries brides ask for are regional traditions with deep roots in India. Our karigars work in several of them:

  • Zardozi: metallic thread, sequins and beads, built up into raised, rich patterns. Read more in zardozi lehenga for the bride.

  • Gota: ribbon work from Rajasthan, light on the body and bright in daylight.

  • Phulkari: the flowering thread work of Punjab, often chosen by Punjabi brides for its family meaning.

  • Chikankari: the fine, mostly white shadow work of Lucknow.

  • Kashmiri tilla and aari: delicate metallic and chain-stitch embroidery in paisley and floral patterns.

A wedding lehenga from India can mix these, for example a zardozi border with a chikankari dupatta, as long as the designer plans the balance from the start.

One designer, one story across every function

An Indian wedding is rarely one outfit. There may be a roka, a mehndi, a sangeet, the wedding and a reception. When each outfit is bought from a different place, the photos can look like they belong to different weddings.

Working with one designer lets you plan the whole set together. The mehndi outfit can be light and playful, the wedding lehenga rich and traditional, and the reception look modern, but they share a colour thread or a motif that ties the story together. See our ideas for a sangeet and mehndi outfit and for choosing a reception lehenga or gown.

Room for your own meaning

Bridal lehengas from India can carry far more than pattern. Our karigars can embroider your names, your wedding date, or your initials in English, Devanagari, Gurmukhi or Urdu. Some brides choose a scene: the dulha and dulhan, a doli, a baraat. Others choose a motif that means something to the family, such as a lotus, a peacock or an elephant.

If you would like sacred words, such as a mantra, a shlok or the laavan, please confirm the exact words and spelling with your family elder, priest or granthi. We place sacred text on the dupatta, worn on the head or shoulders, and never on the skirt hem or anywhere it touches the floor.

Not only lehengas

Brides often start by looking for Indian wedding dresses from India and find they want more than one silhouette. We also make sharara and gharara sets, anarkalis, crop top lehengas, and gowns for a church or white-dress ceremony. White and ivory bridal lehengas are possible too. What changes when you live abroad

Three things change, and each has an answer:

  • Design: the whole design conversation happens on video call and WhatsApp video, until you approve the final design.

  • Fit: our designer guides you through your measurements on video; if you visit India before the wedding, you can have a trial at our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram with alterations; and we leave extra margin in the seams for a tailor near you.

  • Delivery: we ship worldwide, and you pay your own country's customs duty and import taxes on arrival. Rules differ by country, so check your country's customs website before ordering.

How it works

Message us on WhatsApp +91 92896 79666 with your wedding date, the functions you are planning for, and any pictures you love. Our designer sets up a video call, listens to your story and sketches a plan. You see the price before anything is cut, and payment is in full in advance. Once you approve the design, the designer gives you a delivery date, which depends on how much embroidery the design carries, so start early. Our karigars embroider it to your measurements and we ship it to you.
