Aunt of the bride

Aunt of the bride outfits: one look per function, roka to reception

The simplest set of aunt of the bride outfits is one look per function, each chosen for the mood and the hours of that event: graceful for the roka, easy for the haldi and mehndi, lively for the sangeet, rich for the wedding and polished for the reception. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, this is the lookbook we walk through with aunts who want a complete plan rather than one dress at a time.

Roka or engagement: what feels right?

These are often intimate, with elders, sweets and many family photos. You want to look festive without looking dressed for a stage.

  • Look: a festive suit or a floor-length anarkali with a fine dupatta.
  • Colour ideas: rose, peach, powder blue, mint or ivory with a coloured border.
  • Tip: three-quarter sleeves look neat in close-up photos and keep you comfortable indoors.

Our engagement collection has shapes that suit this softer mood.

Haldi: what can take a splash of turmeric?

The haldi is hands-on and usually in daylight. Choose something you will not worry about.

  • Look: a sharara or gharara set, or a light cotton or georgette suit.
  • Colour ideas: yellow, mustard, white, mango or a fresh lime, though we make any colour you like.
  • Tip: gota patti and mirror work catch daylight beautifully and suit the mood.

Mehndi: how do I stay comfortable for hours?

You may sit on low seating while the bride's henna is applied, and you may have your own hands done. Pick an outfit that lets you sit cross-legged and keeps sleeves clear of wet henna.

  • Look: a light lehenga with an easy flare, or an anarkali with elbow-length sleeves.
  • Colour ideas: green, teal, parrot, fuchsia or a cheerful multicolour.

Sangeet: what if I am dancing?

Many aunts perform, and the photos from this night are often the family favourites. On request we make a lighter flare and secure the dupatta and blouse for dancing. Rich evening tones such as wine, sapphire, emerald or champagne glow under stage lights. Browse our sangeet collection for flared shapes.

Wedding day: what is the aunt's richest look?

This is usually the outfit to invest in. You will be close to the mandap and in the ceremony photos.

  • Look: a lehenga or a heavier silk saree, with a well-fitted blouse.
  • Colour ideas: gold, plum, magenta, bottle green or deep teal, leaving the bride's colour to her.
  • Tip: if you will sit through the pheras, ask for a lighter version in work and fabric. Any made-to-order lehenga or saree can be made lighter for long functions.

Reception: how do I change the mood?

After days of lehengas, the reception is the night for a gown, an anarkali gown, an indo-western set or a lehenga saree. Soft metallics, midnight blue, blush and silver all feel fresh under evening lights. See our reception collection for ideas.

Ready or made to order, and when?

Ready lehengas, sarees, suits and gowns at the showroom can be altered, usually within about a week, and sleeves can be added or lengthened on most ready pieces. For the looks you care about most, made to order lets you choose fabric, colour, neckline, sleeves and embroidery one by one. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier.

For a single festive outfit, order three to four weeks ahead. If the whole family is ordering together, start about four weeks before the first function for lighter work and about eight weeks for heavy hand embroidery. Our guide to outfits for every function has more on pacing a wedding wardrobe.

Our showroom is at Shop 226A, 2nd Floor, DT Mega Mall, Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1, Sector 28, Gurugram, open every day from 11 AM to 9 PM. Walk-ins are welcome to see pieces.
