Aunt of the bride

Aunt of the bride dresses for over 50s: graceful and easy to wear

Aunt of the bride dresses for over 50s should feel graceful, generous in comfort and completely like you, whether that means a silk saree, a flowing anarkali, a column gown or a lighter lehenga. At House of Daisy, our showroom on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, aunts in their fifties wear every one of these, and what matters most is how the outfit is cut, lined and finished for a long day.

What does graceful mean to you?

There is no single rule after fifty. Some aunts love the richness of a Banarasi brocade; others want a soft georgette that moves. Some have worn sarees all their lives and want a lehenga for the first time at their niece's wedding. Start with how you want to feel, and we will build the outfit around that.

  • Classic: a silk saree with a beautifully cut blouse.
  • Flowing: a floor-length anarkali with a sheer dupatta.
  • Modern: a gown or a cape set for the reception.
  • Festive: a lighter lehenga with a longer choli for the sangeet or the wedding.

Which comfort details are worth asking for?

Comfort is what lets you enjoy every function, so ask freely. On request, a made-to-order outfit can have:

  • a front or side zip instead of hooks at the back;
  • an elastic or drawstring waist;
  • a soft lining throughout;
  • hidden pockets in a gown, suit or lehenga;
  • lighter work and fabric on a lehenga or saree, for long functions.

On ready pieces, sleeves can be added or lengthened, and on most ready lehengas and gowns the neckline can be raised or a back panel closed, usually within about a week.

How do I choose colours as the bride's aunt?

Ask the bride's family about their colours for each function and choose a shade that sits beside them. Families are asking about deep jewel tones, soft pastels with gold, and ivory with a coloured border. Rani pink, emerald, royal blue, wine, mauve, peach and gold are all lovely directions. There is no colour you are too old for; the question is only what feels right for the function.

Which function gets which outfit?

  • Roka or mehndi: a soft anarkali or festive suit; see our anarkali collection.
  • Sangeet: a lighter lehenga or a sharara set if you are dancing.
  • Wedding day: your richest saree or lehenga.
  • Reception: a gown, a lehenga saree or a silk saree.
  • Winter evenings: a matching shawl or stole, made to order for any outfit.

Ready or made to order?

Ready sarees, suits and gowns come in a range of sizes; suits, anarkalis and gowns go up to 5XL and beyond. For the outfit you care about most, made to order lets you choose fabric, colour, neckline, sleeves and embroidery one by one, with a sketch first. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. For a single festive outfit, order three to four weeks ahead; for a family order with heavy hand embroidery, about eight weeks.

If your sisters or the bride's mother are choosing too, our guide to outfits for the bride's mother and sisters shows how one consultation can plan the whole family.
