The best way to plan your aunt of the bride outfit is to start from your role, not from a shop window: decide what you will be doing at each function, then choose a look that lets you do it in comfort and still shine in the photos. At House of Daisy, our showroom on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, many mausis, buas, chachis and mamis begin exactly this way, and the wardrobe falls into place far more easily.
What does the bride's aunt actually do at each function?
An aunt is rarely just a guest. Depending on your family, you may welcome the groom's side, sit through long rituals, help the bride dress, lead the dancing at the sangeet or stand beside your sister for hours greeting people. Customs vary by family and community, so ask the bride's parents early which moments include you. Then write a short list next to each function:
- Sitting for long: choose a skirt or kurta that sits well and fabric that does not crease badly.
- Moving and serving: a dupatta you can pin, and sleeves that stay out of the way.
- On stage or dancing: a lighter flare and a blouse that stays put.
- Greeting all evening: comfortable footwear in mind when you choose the length.
How do I keep my outfits in step with the bride's family?
Ask the bride or her mother what colours they are planning. You do not need to match; you only need to sit well beside them. If the bride is in red on the wedding day, many aunts choose gold, plum, rani, emerald or a deep teal. If the family has chosen a palette for a function, pick a shade from it that is not the bride's.
When the whole family wants to plan together, one consultation can cover every woman's outfits, with one palette, different styles, and who wears which shade at each function. Our guide to outfits for every function shows how the bride's own looks are planned, and yours can follow the same rhythm.
Which function deserves my hero outfit?
Choose one. For most aunts it is the wedding day itself, because you will be in the ceremony photos. Some choose the sangeet instead, if they are dancing. Put your richest work and your favourite colour into that one look, and keep the others lighter. This saves energy on long days and makes your photos look varied rather than repetitive.
Should I buy ready pieces or have them made to order?
Most aunts mix the two. Ready lehengas, sarees, suits and gowns at the showroom can be altered, usually within about a week: lehengas in length, waist and flare, gowns in length, waist and sleeves. Sleeves can be added or lengthened on most ready pieces, and on most ready lehengas and gowns the neckline can be raised or a back panel closed.
For your hero look, made to order lets you choose fabric, colour, neckline, sleeves and embroidery one by one. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. Any made-to-order lehenga or saree can be made lighter in work and fabric, so you stay comfortable through long functions.
When should I start?
- A single festive outfit: order three to four weeks ahead.
- Family or group orders: about four weeks before the first function for lighter work, and about eight weeks for heavy hand embroidery.
- Under three weeks away: we will point you to ready pieces, as we take no rush made-to-order work.
Browse our wedding-day collection for ideas before you visit, and if your sisters or sisters-in-law want to coordinate, see our group orders page.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Bring the function list, a photo or swatch of the bride's outfits if you have one, and the people whose opinion you trust. Even if the bride's lehenga is not from us, we can match your outfit to it from a photo or swatch using our shade cards.
Our showroom is at Shop 226A, 2nd Floor, DT Mega Mall, Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1, Sector 28, Gurugram. We are open every day from 11 AM to 9 PM. There is seating, and a staff member helps you try on.
