Maid of Honour at an Indian Wedding: Is There One, and What Does She Wear?

White Raw Silk Lehenga from House of Daisy

Traditional Indian weddings don't have a "maid of honour". The bride's sisters, cousins and friends have always surrounded her, with no single title. But many brides now borrow the idea: one person, usually a sister or the closest friend, who leads the group and stays by the bride's side.

What an Indian maid of honour usually does

  • Leads the bridesmaids: sets the dress code, keeps the group's plans together.

  • Plans the bachelorette and often the sangeet performance.

  • Stays with the bride through the rituals: fixing the dupatta, holding the lehenga, carrying the bag.

  • Handles the moments the bride can't: answering calls, checking timings, keeping water and safety pins nearby.

Is it a sister or a friend?

Either. In many families it's the bride's sister, sometimes a cousin, sometimes her closest friend. Some brides choose two. There's no rule.

What the maid of honour wears

She usually matches the bridesmaids, with one small difference so she stands out:

  • The same palette, a slightly deeper shade.

  • The same colour, a different silhouette: a saree among lehengas, for example.

  • A different dupatta or a richer border.

  • A little more embroidery, while staying clearly lighter than the bride.

Practical outfit tips for the role

  • A dupatta that stays put, because her hands are always busy. See dupatta draping.

  • A lehenga made to her shoe height, so she can move quickly without tripping.

  • Something she can dance in at the sangeet. See sangeet lehengas.

Organising the group's outfits

The maid of honour is often the one who organises the bridesmaids' outfits. With a bridesmaid and family order, she gives us everyone's name and WhatsApp number, and we send each person her own link for measurements and follow up, so she doesn't have to. Everyone can pay together or separately, and there's no minimum group size. Start about four weeks before the first function. See how custom bridesmaid dresses are made.
