A lehenga for your cousin sister's wedding day should look rich enough for close family, the people in the ceremony photos, while leaving the bride's colour and her heaviest sparkle to her. Get those two things right and almost any style works. At House of Daisy, on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, the cousin's wedding-day lehenga is one of the pieces we help with most, so here is how we think it through.
How heavy should a cousin's wedding-day lehenga be?
Think "one step below the bride". Close family usually wear their richest outfit of the wedding on this day, but you will also be moving: fetching things, sitting through the ceremony, standing for photographs. A lehenga with work concentrated on the border and blouse, and a lighter body to the skirt, gives you the festive look without the weight of a bridal piece. A jacket or a heavily worked dupatta can add richness that comes off when you need to move.
Which colours sit well beside the bride?
Ask the bride or her mother what she is wearing first. Then choose a colour that is festive but clearly yours:
- If she wears red: gold, rani pink, plum, wine, emerald or a deep teal.
- If she wears pastel: a richer jewel tone, such as sapphire or ruby pink, so the photos have contrast.
- If the family has a theme: follow it, and pick your own shade within it.
These are only directions; we make any colour you want, and you can see shades side by side with our fabric swatches at the showroom.
What blouse and dupatta work for the ceremony?
Many ceremonies involve covering the head, bending, sitting cross-legged and long hours. A blouse with elbow or three-quarter sleeves is comfortable and suits most families' customs, which vary, so ask yours. Add cups or padding to any blouse, ready or made to order, if you prefer not to wear a separate bra. For the dupatta, a lighter net or organza you can pin is easier than a heavy one, and we can add hidden loops on request so you can pin it without damaging the fabric.
Ready or made to order?
Both suit a cousin. Our wedding-day collection has ready lehengas in a range of sizes; length, waist and flare are altered at the showroom, usually within about a week, the blouse can be made to your choice, and the can-can is detachable.
If you want something only yours, made to order lets you choose the fabric, colour, neckline, sleeves and embroidery one by one: mirror work, gota patti, chikankari, zardozi, dabka or aari. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. Allow about eight weeks if the embroidery is heavy, and three to four weeks for a lighter festive piece.
What if my sisters and I want to coordinate?
Close cousins often coordinate for the wedding day. Each of you can choose your own silhouette in a shared fabric and colour story, so you look like a family without looking like a uniform. A group can book one styling appointment together, and there is no minimum size. Read more on our group orders page and in our guide to family outfits.
How do I make it comfortable for a long day?
- Have the length set to the heels you will wear, with a little room so you do not catch the hem on stairs.
- Take the can-can out if the venue is crowded or you will sit for long.
- Keep a safety pin kit and a light shawl for a cold mandap.
- Try the full outfit, jewellery and shoes once before the day.

Common questions

Yes, if it stays a step below hers. Put the weight in the border, blouse or dupatta, and keep the bride's colour for her.
Can you make the lehenga in my sister's colour story?
Yes. Each of you can choose your own silhouette in a shared fabric and colour story.
Can I bring the bride's swatch to match against?
Yes. Bring a swatch or photo of her outfit, and we will help you choose a shade that complements it.
How long do alterations on a ready lehenga take?
Length, waist and flare are usually altered within about a week at the showroom.
Behen ki shaadi mein kaun sa colour pehnoon?
Pehle dulhan ka colour pooch lijiye. Agar woh red pehen rahi hai, to gold, rani pink, wine ya emerald acche lagte hain.
