A Karwa Chauth special suit design for a new bride usually means a festive colour, rich embroidery on the yoke, sleeves and hem, a neckline that frames her wedding jewellery, and a generous dupatta she can cover her head with for the puja. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, you design your festive outfit with an in-house designer, choosing each detail one by one, and see a sketch before anything is made.
Why choose a suit for Karwa Chauth?
A suit is light, easy to sit in on the floor for the puja, and comfortable through a long fast. Heavily embroidered, it looks every bit as festive as a lehenga in the photographs. It also travels well if you are spending part of the day at your mayka or with relatives.
Which cut should I choose?
- Anarkali: flared from the bust, graceful in motion and at moonrise. See our anarkalis.
- Straight kurta: classic and elegant, with straight pants or a churidar.
- Kurta with sharara or gharara: playful and young, with movement at the hem. See our sharara sets.
- A-line kurta with palazzo: relaxed and very easy to sit in.
Which necklines frame Karwa Chauth jewellery?
- Sweetheart or deep round: gives a wedding necklace room.
- V-neck with an embroidered border: elongates and frames a long rani haar.
- Boat neck: elegant with just earrings and a maang tikka.
- High or mandarin collar: regal, best with statement earrings and no necklace.
Where should the embroidery go?
For a festive suit, the most effective placements are the yoke or neckline, the sleeve hems, the kurta hem and the dupatta border. A heavier yoke draws the eye up to your face for close photographs; a heavy hem gives the suit weight and swing.
- Zardozi and dabka: rich and grand, in gold or antique gold.
- Gota patti: light and festive, lovely on borders.
- Mirror work: sparkles in diya light.
- Chikankari: fine and graceful, for a softer festive look.
- Aari work: fine, flowing patterns on the yoke and sleeves.
What makes a good Karwa Chauth dupatta?
The dupatta often does the most work in a suit. Choose a soft net, organza or georgette with a worked border, long enough to drape over your head and shoulders for the puja without slipping. A double dupatta, one over the head and one across the shoulder, looks very bridal for a first Karwa Chauth.
Which colours make a suit feel right for the day?
Red, maroon, rani pink, orange and gold are the colours most families associate with Karwa Chauth, and a suit in any of them, worked in gold, feels festive straight away. A softer base, such as peach or rose, can be lifted with a bright dupatta in red or rani. Ask your family about any colours they avoid; customs vary. We make any colour you want.
How is a festive suit made to order?
At your consultation, you choose the fabric, colour, neckline, sleeves, embroidery and its placement one by one. Your designer shares a sketch for your approval before anything is made, and you see an embroidery sample before the whole piece is worked. Our made-to-order crafts are mirror work, gota patti, chikankari, zardozi, dabka and aari, with tested zari only. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. We make any colour you want.
