A Karwa Chauth saree for a new bride is usually red or maroon, in a silk or soft silk blend with a rich border, draped so the pleats and pallu stay put while she sits for the puja and stands at moonrise. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, we help new brides pick the saree, the blouse and the drape together, so the look feels graceful from the afternoon to the moment the fast is broken.
Choose your Karwa Chauth saree
Why choose a saree for the first Karwa Chauth?
In many families the saree is the traditional dress for the evening puja, and a mother-in-law may be delighted to see her new daughter-in-law in one. A saree is lighter than most lehengas, sits easily on the floor, and the pallu gives you a natural way to cover your head. If your family prefers a lehenga or suit, that is fine too; customs vary.
Which reds and silks look most festive?
- Classic red with a gold border. Timeless, and it echoes your wedding without repeating it.
- Maroon or wine. Deep and rich under evening light.
- Red with a contrast border. Green, gold or pink borders feel festive and fresh.
- Silk blends and tissue. Tissue has a soft shimmer that glows at moonrise.
Banarasi brocade can be cut and tailored to your measurements for the blouse, which gives a plain silk saree a rich partner. We make any colour you want, so if you would rather wear rani pink or orange, say so.
How do I keep the drape in place through the puja?
- Pin the pleats twice. Once at the waist, once lower down inside, so they do not open when you sit cross-legged.
- Choose a pallu with some weight. A bordered pallu stays over the head better than a slippery, plain one.
- Use a small pin at the shoulder and one at the head. Hidden pins hold the pallu while you hold the thali and sieve.
- Wear the petticoat snug. A loose petticoat lets the whole saree shift as the evening goes on.
If you do not drape sarees often, a ready-to-wear saree can be a relief: the pleats are set, and you only need to settle the pallu. See our ready-to-wear sarees, or browse our sarees.
What blouse suits a Karwa Chauth saree?
- Elbow sleeves: graceful, and warmer for an outdoor moonrise.
- A sweetheart or round neckline: gives your wedding necklace room.
- A back with a tie and latkans: pretty from behind, where many puja photos are taken.
- A comfortable fit: a little ease is kind on a fasting day.
Embroidery on the blouse sleeves and back, such as zardozi, dabka or gota patti, lifts a simpler saree beautifully.
Can I have a saree blouse or festive saree look made to order?
Yes. You choose the fabric, colour, neckline, sleeves, embroidery and its placement one by one, and your designer shares a sketch for your approval before anything is made. Our made-to-order crafts include mirror work, gota patti, chikankari, zardozi, dabka and aari, using tested zari only. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier.
Order a made-to-order festive outfit 3 to 4 weeks before Karwa Chauth. It is priced on its fabric, embroidery and hours of work, and the designer quotes after the sketch. To plan your saree alongside your other first-year looks, read outfits for every function.

Questions brides ask
Is a saree right for a first Karwa Chauth?
Yes. It is a traditional choice in many families, light to wear and easy to drape over the head for the puja.
Which colour saree should a new bride wear?
Red and maroon are most common. Pink, orange and gold are loved too. Ask about your family's customs.
I can't drape a saree. What can I do?
Try a ready-to-wear saree with set pleats, so you only settle the pallu.
Can you make the blouse to my measurements?
Yes. Your blouse can be made to order with the neckline, sleeves and embroidery you choose.
Karwa Chauth pe saree pehnu ya lehenga?
Dono chalte hain. Saree halki hoti hai aur pallu se sar dhakna aasaan hai. Apne sasural ka rivaaj bhi poochh lijiye.
Pallu baar baar girta hai, kya karun?
Border wala pallu chuniye aur kandhe aur sar pe chhupi pins lagaiye. Woh puja tak jagah pe rahega.
