Grandmother of the bride dress code: in the theme, never in uniform

The grandmother of the bride can follow a family dress code by taking the theme's colour and changing almost everything else: the depth of the shade, the silhouette, the fabric and the amount of shine. That way she belongs in every photograph without looking as if she borrowed a bridesmaid's outfit. At House of Daisy, our showroom on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, this is one of the questions families ask most when they plan coordinated wedding outfits.

Why do dress codes trip up grandmothers?

Colour themes are a direction many families are asking about: pastels for the mehndi, one jewel tone for the sangeet, ivory and gold for a day wedding. The trouble comes when the theme is applied as a uniform. The cousins and bridesmaids may all wear the same pale lilac lehenga, and suddenly the nani is asked to wear it too. She rarely wants to, and she should not have to. A theme is a palette, not a costume.

How can she join the theme and still look like herself?

  • Shift the depth. If the bridesmaids wear powder pink, the nani can wear a deeper rose or an old pink. Same family of colour, a more settled feel.
  • Change the silhouette. The girls in lehengas, the nani in a saree, suit or anarkali in the same shade.
  • Change the fabric. Their georgette with sequins, her silk or chanderi with fine zari.
  • Use the theme as an accent. A neutral ivory or gold outfit with a dupatta or border in the theme colour joins the group gently.
  • Keep the work finer. Many grandmothers prefer an even, fine embroidery to bold sparkle, and that alone sets her apart.

Can one fabric be made into different styles?

Yes, and this is one of the nicest ways to coordinate. One fabric can be made into any style for each woman of the family: a lehenga for the granddaughter, a suit for the mother, a saree for the nani. The colour matches perfectly, and each woman wears the shape she is comfortable in. Families also choose a shared motif, such as florals or peacocks, hand-embroidered to order on each made-to-order outfit, which links everyone without anyone wearing the same thing.

What if relatives live in other cities?

Relatives in other cities can get swatches from our shade cards by courier, and photos, so the whole family can see the colours before ordering. Measurements can be taken at home with our measurement guide, with a video call for help. Finished outfits go to each person's own address, anywhere in the world. Our group orders page explains how a family books one styling appointment together.

What should the plan cover?

One consultation can plan the whole family's women's outfits: one palette, different styles, and who wears which shade at each function. For the nani, add a note of what she finds easy: an elastic or drawstring waist, a front or side zip, a soft lining or longer sleeves. All of these can be added to an elder's made-to-order outfit on request. Our guide to family outfits beside the bride walks through the planning.

Ready and made-to-order pieces together

A family order can mix ready and made-to-order pieces freely. The nani might choose a ready saree in the theme colour while the granddaughters' lehengas are made to order. Browse our sarees to see shades we keep ready.

For made to order, the first design consultation is free, at the showroom or on a video call. Our designers share a sketch for approval, and you see an embroidery sample before the whole piece is made. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. For a family order, start about four weeks before the first function for lighter work and about eight weeks for heavy hand embroidery.

Our showroom is Shop 226A, 2nd Floor, DT Mega Mall, Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1, Sector 28, Gurugram, open every day from 11 AM to 9 PM. There is seating, and a staff member helps elders try pieces on. Walk-ins are welcome to see pieces; consultations are by appointment.
