Outfit ideas for best friend wedding, sorted by the role you play

The most useful outfit ideas for a best friend wedding start with a simple question: what will you actually be doing? The friend leading the sangeet dance, the friend running the bride's schedule and the friend who never leaves her side in photos each need something a little different. At House of Daisy, our showroom on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, we plan best friends' outfits around their role, and here is how we think about it.

What should the dancer wear?

If you are choreographing or performing, your outfit has to move with you and stay put.

  • A lighter lehenga with a controlled flare. It twirls without tangling. On request we make a lighter flare and secure the dupatta and blouse for dancing.
  • A cape or a pinned dupatta. A cape stays on through every spin; a dupatta can be stitched or pinned in place.
  • A sharara. Wide legs give the swing of a skirt with the freedom of trousers.
  • Fabric with some give: georgette and crepe move; stiff brocade fights you.

Rehearse in the outfit at least once before the night. Our sangeet collection shows pieces built for movement.

What should the organiser wear?

The friend who keeps the timings, holds the bride's bag and finds the missing earring needs practicality first.

  • Pockets. They can be added to made-to-order gowns, suits and lehengas on request. Your phone stays with you.
  • A pre-draped saree or a suit rather than a free-flowing drape, so nothing comes loose while you climb stairs.
  • Sleeves that let you lift and carry. Three-quarter sleeves are a good middle ground.
  • Shoes you can walk in, which means a hem length set for those exact shoes.

What should the friend in every photo wear?

If the bride wants you by her side in every frame, you are part of her album. Think about how the two of you look together.

  • A colour that sits beside hers. A softer or deeper relative of her shade, or a contrast she has approved. We can match your outfit to her lehenga from a photo or swatch using our shade cards, even if hers is from elsewhere.
  • Embroidery visible at close range. Detail matters in portraits: a fine border, a worked blouse back.
  • A dupatta that drapes cleanly. Discreet loops for pinning a heavy dupatta can be added on request.

What if I play all three roles?

Many best friends do. Then split your outfits across the functions. Keep the sangeet for dance-ready pieces, the wedding day for your most photogenic outfit and the busy mornings for something practical. Our guide to coordinating outfits around the bride shows how families plan several looks together.

How do I get the outfit made for my role?

Tell the designer what you will be doing at each function. The first design consultation is free, in the showroom or on a video call. You choose fabric, colour, neckline, sleeves and embroidery, approve a sketch, and see an embroidery sample before the full piece is made. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. For a single festive outfit, order three to four weeks ahead. If several friends are ordering together, start about four weeks before the first function for lighter work and about eight weeks for heavy hand embroidery; see our group order page.

Ready lehengas are also altered at the showroom in length, waist and flare, usually within about a week.

Visit us at Shop 226A, 2nd Floor, DT Mega Mall, Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1, Sector 28, Gurugram, open every day from 11 AM to 9 PM. Walk-ins are welcome to see pieces, and consultations are by appointment.
