Godh bharai

Godh bharai outfit ideas for every stage of pregnancy

The best godh bharai outfit ideas depend on when your function falls: earlier in pregnancy you can wear almost anything with a softer waist, while later on a flowing anarkali, a roomy lehenga or a relaxed suit feels far kinder. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, we plan godh bharai looks around the month, the season and how the day will run, and this guide sorts our favourite ideas by stage.

Why does the month of the function matter so much?

Families hold the godh bharai at different times. Some choose the fifth month, many the seventh, and some wait until the eighth. Customs vary by family and community, so your elders will usually tell you when it suits them. What changes from month to month is how much room you want at the waist, how long you are happy to sit, and how easily you want to get up and down for the rituals and photographs.

So instead of choosing an outfit first and hoping it fits on the day, it helps to start with the date and work backwards.

What works for an earlier godh bharai?

Earlier on, you may still feel comfortable in many of your usual festive pieces. Good ideas for this stage:

  • A light lehenga with a crop-top or longer choli. Choose a skirt with a drawstring or an adjustable waist so it stays easy through the day.
  • A straight suit with a sharara. The flare of a sharara is festive and the kurta skims the body without pressing.
  • A soft silk or georgette saree. Tucked a little higher, it feels secure and looks graceful.

Our sharara and gharara collection has several sets that suit this stage well.

What works for a godh bharai in the seventh month?

This is when comfort starts to lead. Ideas that mothers-to-be enjoy at this stage:

  • A floor-length anarkali. Fitted only at the chest, then a full flare. It photographs beautifully and asks nothing of your waist.
  • A lehenga with a longer choli. A choli that ends lower, with side ties, keeps you covered and comfortable when you sit.
  • A kurta with a lehenga skirt. A long kurta worn over a flared skirt gives the lehenga look with far more ease.
  • A ready-to-wear saree. Pre-draped pleats mean no tight tucking at the waist.

What works in the eighth month and later?

Later in pregnancy, keep it simple and flowing. A soft anarkali gown with adjustable side ties, a loose kurta with palazzo, or a kaftan-style suit in a festive fabric all look celebratory without any structure at the waist. Choose a fabric that breathes, such as chanderi, mul or a light silk blend, and keep heavy embroidery to the neckline and sleeves so the body of the outfit stays light.

For anything about your health, such as how long it is wise to sit for a ritual, please ask your doctor. We look after comfort and fit.

How do I plan one outfit that works if my dates shift?

Plan for a little room either way. Any made-to-order outfit can be made maternity-friendly, with an adjustable waist, a longer choli and side ties. We keep it to one fitting at the showroom, and the rest is done from measurements you send. If the bump grows faster than expected, the outfit can be altered again later at the showroom, and it can be altered again after delivery so you can wear it to the naming ceremony.

Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier, with crafts such as gota patti, mirror work, chikankari, zardozi, dabka and aari, and tested zari only. Order 3 to 4 weeks before the godh bharai. If it is under 3 weeks away, we will suggest ready pieces, because we do not take rush made-to-order work. Our guide to the free design consultation explains how the first meeting works.

Where can I see these ideas in person?

Our only showroom is at Shop 226A, 2nd Floor, DT Mega Mall, Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1, Sector 28, Gurugram, open every day from 11 AM to 9 PM. Walk-ins are welcome to see pieces, and consultations are by appointment. Your first design consultation is free, in the showroom or on a video call, which is handy if travelling is tiring right now.

Common questions

Which outfit suits a godh bharai in the seventh month?

An anarkali, a lehenga with a longer choli and side ties, or a ready-to-wear saree. All three leave the waist comfortable.

Can I order before I know how big the bump will be?

Yes. A made-to-order outfit can have an adjustable waist and side ties, and it can be altered again later at the showroom.

How many fittings will I need?

One fitting at the showroom. The rest is done from measurements you send us.

Is a sharara comfortable for a godh bharai?

Often, yes, especially earlier in pregnancy. Ask for an elastic or drawstring waist on the sharara.
