The right godh bharai dress is the one you can sit, smile and receive blessings in for three or four hours without once thinking about your waist, and for most mothers-to-be that means an anarkali, a soft suit, a light lehenga with an adjustable waist, or a saree draped above the bump. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, we help you compare all four, try ready pieces in the showroom and, if you prefer, plan one made to order around your comfort.
Which outfit is the easiest to wear for a godh bharai?
If you want one answer, it is the anarkali. It fits closely only at the chest and then flares, so nothing presses on your waist. It needs no draping and no pinning, and it looks festive in photographs. A suit with a straight or A-line kurta comes a close second, especially for a smaller function at home.
A lehenga and a saree are both lovely choices too. They simply ask a little more planning: a lehenga needs a waist that adjusts, and a saree needs a drape that sits comfortably. Neither is difficult once you know what to ask for.
How do the four options compare?
- Anarkali. Flare from the chest down, easy to sit cross-legged or on a low seat, simple to put on. A long dupatta gives you something to cover your head with during the rituals if your family does that.
- Suit. A kurta with palazzo, sharara or straight pants. Light, practical and easy to move in. Lovely for a morning rasam with close family.
- Lehenga. The most celebratory look. Ask for a drawstring or adjustable waist, a lighter skirt and a slightly longer choli so you are not tugging at the hem.
- Saree. Graceful and traditional. A soft silk, georgette or crepe sits well, and a ready-to-wear (pre-draped) saree takes away the worry of pleats.
You can see anarkalis side by side in our anarkali collection before you visit.
What should I think about before deciding?
A few practical questions make the choice much easier:
- How long will you sit? If the rituals run long, choose the outfit with the least structure at the waist.
- Is it at home or in a hall? At home, a suit or a light anarkali feels natural. In a banquet, a lehenga or a richer saree suits the setting.
- What is the season? Cotton, chanderi and mul for summer; silk and soft velvet for winter evenings.
- How far along will you be? Close to the due date, a flowing anarkali or suit is usually the calmest choice.
- Will you change for a second event? Some mothers wear a lehenga for photographs and slip into a suit later.
Customs vary by family and community, so ask your elders whether there is a colour or a head covering they would like for the rituals. It is easier to plan the outfit around that from the start.
Can a ready piece work, or should it be made for me?
Both work. Ready anarkalis, suits and gowns come in sizes up to 5XL and beyond, and many ready pieces can be altered at the showroom, usually within about a week. Ready lehengas can be altered in length, waist and flare, and their can-can is detachable, which many mothers-to-be prefer to leave off.
A made-to-order piece is the better route if you want everything decided around comfort. Any made-to-order outfit can be made maternity-friendly, with an adjustable waist, a longer choli and side ties. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. Order a made-to-order festive outfit 3 to 4 weeks ahead. If your godh bharai is under 3 weeks away, we will suggest ready pieces, because we do not take rush made-to-order work.
How do fittings work when I cannot come in often?
We keep it to one fitting at the showroom, and the rest is done from measurements you send us. Your outfit can be altered again later at the showroom as the bump grows, or after the baby arrives, so it keeps fitting well. If you would like discreet feeding-friendly openings for wearing it again after delivery, we add zips or openings on request.
For anything about your health, such as how long you should sit or stand, please ask your doctor. We look after comfort and fit.
