A calligraphy dupatta carries words you have chosen, written in flowing script and embroidered along the border or across the pallu. For many brides that means their names and the nikah date in Urdu; for others it is a line of poetry, a short dua the family loves, or names in English and Devanagari side by side. Our karigars embroider the lettering, and brides living abroad plan every letter with our designer on video call.
What we embroider in calligraphy
Keep the words few and meaningful. Calligraphy reads well when it has room to breathe.
Your names: yours and your partner's, joined in one line or set at either end of the border.
The nikah date: written out in words or numerals, often in a corner of the pallu.
A line of poetry: a couplet your parents recited, or a line that means something to the two of you.
A dua the family chooses: a short prayer for the marriage, confirmed by your elders.
We do not embroider verses of the Quran on clothing. For words of faith, many families choose a short dua instead, and some prefer to keep words off the dupatta entirely and choose motifs. We respect both choices.
Urdu calligraphy dupatta and other scripts
An Urdu calligraphy dupatta is the most requested version, and the flowing letters suit a border beautifully. Our karigars also embroider calligraphy in English, Hindi and Devanagari, Gurmukhi and Sanskrit, so a dupatta with calligraphy can carry two scripts at once. That works well for mixed families, or when you want guests from both sides to read the names.
An Urdu writing dupatta needs extra care because the script runs right to left and the dots above and below each letter change its meaning. Our designer checks the direction and spacing on the drawing before any thread goes in.
Getting the words right
Ask a family elder or the person leading your nikah to confirm the exact words and spelling, especially for a dua or a line of poetry. Then send us:
A typed copy of the text, so nothing is guessed.
A photo of it written by hand, if someone in the family writes a beautiful hand. We can follow that writing closely, which makes the piece even more personal.
A reference for the style you like, such as a wedding card, a framed print or a picture you have saved.
Our designer lays the calligraphy onto a drawing of the dupatta and sends it back. Have the same elder check it before you approve the design.
Where the calligraphy sits
A dua or any words of faith belong on the dupatta, worn on the head or shoulders, and never on the hem of the skirt or anywhere that touches the floor. Names and dates can go wherever you like.
Along the border: the words frame your face when the dupatta is on your head.
Across the pallu: one bold line, seen as you walk in and in every photograph from behind.
In the corners: small and discreet, for initials or the date.
Thread and finish
Gold zardozi and dabka give the letters a raised, rich edge that reads clearly from across a room. Silver thread suits ivory, mint and pastel dupattas. For a softer look, our karigars embroider the calligraphy in resham, or in Kashmiri tilla, which suits a nikah particularly well; see our Kashmiri bridal lehenga post for more on tilla and aari.
Calligraphy also pairs well with other personalised pieces. Many brides carry the groom's name on the nikah dupatta and keep a second dupatta for the farewell. Read our nikah dupatta with groom name post, and ideas for the rukhsati dupatta and the walima bridal dupatta.
