A bridal lehenga storage box, wide and flat and lined with acid-free tissue, is usually the safest home for a heavy lehenga: it keeps the piece flat, dark and dust-free without pressing on it. At House of Daisy on Golf Course Road, Gurugram, brides often ask whether the family trunk or a padded hanger will do. Each has its place, and here is how they compare.
Ask us about caring for your lehenga
What makes a good storage box?
- Wide and shallow. Big enough that the skirt lies with only two or three folds, and shallow enough that nothing stacks deeply on it.
- Acid-free inside. Ordinary cardboard and printed paper can yellow fabric over the years. Use an acid-free archival box, or line any clean box well with acid-free tissue and a cotton sheet.
- A lid that closes but is not airtight. It keeps out light, dust and insects while still letting a little air in.
- Light to lift. You will take it out every few months to refold, so it should be easy to handle.
How do I set up the box?
- Line the base with a washed white cotton sheet, leaving enough to fold over the top.
- Lay a layer of acid-free tissue on the sheet.
- Place the skirt in, embroidery facing in, with rolled tissue in every fold.
- Add another sheet of tissue, then the blouse, padded gently so it keeps its shape.
- Store the dupatta in its own box or wrap if it is heavy, so it does not press the skirt.
- Fold the cotton sheet over everything, close the lid, and write the date on the outside.
What about the old family trunk?
A steel or wooden trunk can work well, especially for a family that already keeps its wedding clothes this way. A few things to watch:
- Air the trunk on a dry day before use and make sure it does not smell of damp.
- Line it with cotton; bare metal can get cold and gather condensation in humid weather, and raw wood can mark fabric.
- Keep the lehenga near the top, not under ten other outfits.
- Keep mothballs out of direct contact with the fabric; many families now prefer neem leaves or cedar in a separate cloth pouch.
And a hanger?
A heavy bridal skirt should not hang by its waistband for months. Its own weight pulls on the waist seam and the embroidery near the top. A padded hanger is fine for a blouse or a lighter dupatta for a short time, or for a light lehenga you wear often. For the bridal piece itself, flat in a box is kinder.
Where should the box live?
In a dry room, off the floor, away from outer walls that get damp in the monsoon, and out of direct sunlight. The top shelf of a wardrobe or a high cupboard in an air-conditioned room is often a good spot. Avoid the store room next to a bathroom or kitchen.
Does House of Daisy give a box or bag?
We do not promise a storage box or bag with a lehenga. What we can do is advise: if your lehenga came from us, bring it to the showroom or WhatsApp us, and we will look at it with you. Our page on visiting House of Daisy has the details. We do not clean, steam or press in-house. We alter and resize lehengas we sold, at the showroom, and for lehengas bought from us we restyle or rework them into another outfit, such as a gown, anarkali, saree or suit.
Can a new lehenga be designed to fit in a box more easily?
On request, yes. A made-to-order lehenga can be designed to be worn again, with a detachable dupatta, a separate blouse, a skirt worn on its own and a detachable can-can. Without its can-can, a skirt lies far flatter in a box. You choose fabric, colour, neckline, sleeves and embroidery one by one, approve a sketch and see an embroidery sample before the whole piece is made. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier. Order at least 8 weeks before the wedding. Browse our bridal lehengas for ideas.

Questions brides ask
Can I use a normal cardboard box?
For a short time, yes, if it is clean and well lined with acid-free tissue and cotton. For years, an acid-free box is safer.
Should the box be airtight?
No. A closing lid is enough. Airtight containers can trap moisture.
How many lehengas can go in one box?
One bridal lehenga per box is best, so nothing heavy presses on the embroidery.
Where can I find acid-free tissue?
Stationery, packaging and craft suppliers often stock it. Check the pack says acid-free.
Purane trunk mein lehenga rakh sakte hain?
Haan, agar trunk sukha hai aur andar cotton bichha hai. Lehenga upar rakhiye aur naphthalene seedha kapde se mat lagne dijiye.
