How long does it take to make a lehenga? The honest answer is that it depends on the embroidery. A lehenga with heavy embroidery by our karigars usually needs about eight weeks from design approval, and lighter work needs less. If you live abroad, shipping time comes on top of that. Here is what happens in those weeks, and how to plan so nothing is left to the last minute.
The short answer
Heavy embroidery: usually about eight weeks from the day you approve the design.
Lighter work: less time, depending on how much embroidery there is.
Brides abroad: add shipping time, and some room for customs and a local tailor's final adjustments.
The clock starts at design approval, not at your first message. The time you spend deciding is yours, and it is worth taking. Once the design is approved, the designer gives you a delivery date for your piece.
Stage by stage
Design conversation: you share pictures and ideas in our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram, or on video call and WhatsApp video from abroad.
Design and price: the designer plans the layout and shows you the price before anything is cut.
Approval and payment: you approve the design and pay in full in advance. This is when the delivery date is set.
Fabric and colour: the base fabric is prepared and, where needed, dyed to the shade you chose.
Tracing the design: the pattern, including any names, dates or motifs, is traced onto the fabric.
Embroidery: the fabric is stretched on a wooden frame, the adda, and our karigars embroider it. This is the longest stage by far.
Stitching: the embroidered panels are cut and stitched to your measurements, with lining and can-can.
Finishing: hems, latkans, hooks and a final check of every piece.
Trial or shipping: a trial at our store if you are in India, or shipping if you are abroad.
Why embroidery sets the pace
Embroidery is slow because it is detailed, careful work. Dense zardozi, where metallic thread is couched down in raised patterns, takes far longer than a scattered gota motif. A dulha-dulhan scene or a name in Gurmukhi needs careful tracing and checking. And the more of the skirt is covered, the longer the karigars spend at the frame. If you love heavy work, read about our zardozi lehengas for brides and plan for the longer end.
How long does it take to stitch a lehenga?
Brides often ask how long does it take to stitch a lehenga, as if the stitching were the main job. In fact it is the shorter part. Cutting, stitching, lining and finishing come after the embroidery is complete, and they move much faster. That is also why a semi-stitched piece seems quick: most of the slow work was done before you saw it.
What can slow things down
Changes after approval: a new motif or a different colour can mean re-tracing or re-dyeing.
Late measurements: stitching cannot start until we have them.
Family fabric: an old saree needs restoring and strengthening before it can be reworked, and the designer must see it first. Read about heirloom saree restoration.
Waiting for family decisions: if several people need to approve, give them a deadline.
Planning backwards from your wedding date
So how much time does it take to make a lehenga from first idea to wedding day? Start with your wedding date and work backwards. Leave a cushion before the first function, then shipping and customs if you are abroad, then the making time from approval, then time for the design conversation itself. Most brides find they should start much earlier than they first thought. Our guide on when to start bridal lehenga shopping sets out a full timeline, and our post on lehenga international shipping covers the journey abroad.
