Hindu Wedding in Bali: The Bride's Outfit Plan, Function by Function

Mint Green Organza Silk Saree from House of Daisy

A Hindu wedding in Bali can feel surprisingly familiar. The island has its own Hindu culture, with carved temple gateways, daily offerings of flowers and incense, and marigold and frangipani everywhere, so many Indian families find the pheras sit naturally in the setting. The outfits need planning for one thing above all: tropical heat and humidity.

The setting and the season

An Indian destination wedding in Bali usually takes place in one of a few kinds of setting: a cliff-top lawn above the ocean, a beach on the south coast, or a garden among rice terraces and jungle valleys inland. Each one shapes the outfit. Cliff lawns can be windy, beaches mean sand, and inland gardens can be damp underfoot.

Bali is warm and humid all year. It is commonly described as having a drier season, roughly from April to October, and a wetter one from around November to March, when heavy afternoon showers are common. Many couples choose the drier months, but weather varies year to year, so check the forecast for your dates and plan a covered option for every outdoor function.

Outfits for each function

  • Welcome dinner at sunset: a flowing gown, a co-ord or an Indo-western cape set in georgette or chiffon.

  • Haldi by the pool: a light cotton or cotton silk sharara or anarkali in yellow or marigold, which you do not mind staining.

  • Mehndi: a light lehenga or sharara in green, mint or a tropical floral, with room to sit for hours.

  • Sangeet: a net lehenga or a gown with sequin work that catches the lights.

  • Pheras: your bridal lehenga or saree, planned for heat and for the ground you will walk on.

  • Reception: a gown or saree drape with shine for the evening.

Fabrics for tropical humidity

Humidity makes heavy fabric feel heavier, and silks can lose their crispness by evening. For the bridal lehenga, choose organza, net, georgette or a light raw silk, with a breathable lining and a light cancan. Concentrate the embroidery on the border, blouse and dupatta, and keep the skirt in an open pattern. Save velvet and heavy brocade for a winter wedding at home. Our lightweight bridal lehenga post explains how a bridal piece keeps its richness without the weight.

Colours and motifs from the island

A Bali wedding dress can draw on what you see around you. A few ideas to plan with our designer:

  • Frangipani and lotus: soft floral motifs on the dupatta and border. See our lotus motif lehenga ideas.

  • Rice-terrace greens: mint, sage or emerald for the mehndi.

  • Ocean blues: aqua or powder blue for a cliff-top or beach function.

  • Marigold and temple gold: saffron and gold zari for the wedding day, which glow at sunset.

Pastels and ivory look lovely in Bali's bright daylight; reds, wines and deep golds come alive at a sunset or night ceremony.

What to avoid

  • Long trails on cliff lawns and beaches, where they collect sand and wet grass.

  • Stilettos on lawns and stone paths; choose block heels or embellished flats.

  • A loose, sheer dupatta at a windy cliff ceremony without plenty of pins.

  • Packing outfits in sealed plastic, which traps moisture in humid air.

Getting your outfits to Bali

We ship worldwide, so your outfits can be sent to your home before you fly, or you can collect them at our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram before you travel. If they are shipped to you outside India, you pay your own country's customs duty and import taxes on arrival. Many brides then carry the bridal outfit with them; check your airline's rules and Indonesia's customs website before you fly. Our guide on how to travel with a bridal lehenga has tips for the journey. No one from our team comes to the wedding, so practise dressing at home with whoever will help you on the day.
