Hindu Beach Wedding in Mauritius: Outfits for Every Function

Powder Blue Lehenga from House of Daisy

A Hindu beach wedding in Mauritius brings together turquoise lagoons, white sand and an island with a long Indian heritage. Many couples find that local temples, priests, musicians and flower-sellers already know the ceremonies well, which makes a wedding there feel familiar as well as exotic. What the island cannot change is the tropical heat, so the outfits have to be planned for it.

The island setting

  • Beaches and lagoons: long white beaches, coral reefs and calm lagoons along much of the coast. Sand underfoot for most outdoor functions.

  • Green interior: sugarcane fields, waterfalls and volcanic peaks, especially in the south-west. Lovely for a pre-wedding shoot, with damp paths and sudden showers.

  • Seasons: Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, so its warmer, wetter months fall around the northern winter, and its cooler, drier months around the northern summer. Many couples plan around the stormy season. Check the forecast for your dates before you choose fabrics.

Tropical colours and fabrics

The island is full of colour: fuchsia bougainvillea, red flame trees, parrot green palms and every blue of the lagoon. Bright Indian colours look entirely at home there. Rani pink, marigold, coral and parrot green for the mehndi and sangeet; red or maroon for the pheras, which stands out against the sea; ivory and gold for a morning ceremony. A peacock or tropical-flower theme suits the island beautifully, and our karigars can work it in thread and sequins on a light base.

Keep fabrics breathable: organza, georgette, chiffon, mul, light silk and net. Our karigars place the richest embroidery on the blouse and dupatta border so the skirt stays light enough for sand and heat. Leave velvet and heavy brocade for a cold-weather function at home.

The pheras on the beach

  • Length: an ankle-length skirt, so you can walk the pheras on sand without dragging the hem.

  • Flare without weight: a light can-can or a soft layered lining rather than a stiff, heavy one.

  • Wind and the sacred fire: sea breezes can lift a dupatta towards the fire. Pin it firmly at the head and shoulder, and keep net and loose ends well away from the flames.

  • Words that matter: some brides add a mantra or the couple's names on the dupatta border. See our bridal dupatta with mantra post, and confirm the exact words and spelling with your family elder or priest.

A destination Indian wedding in Mauritius, function by function

  • Haldi: a yellow cotton or mul set you do not mind staining.

  • Mehndi: short sleeves or sleeveless, and a light skirt or sharara. Our bride outfit for mehndi function post has more ideas.

  • Sangeet: mirror work and sequins that catch lantern light on a beach lawn.

  • Wedding: your bridal lehenga, light enough for heat and sand.

  • Reception on the beach: a flowing gown, a saree drape or a light lehenga. See beach wedding reception dress ideas.

Many families planning a destination Indian wedding in Mauritius live abroad and fly in from different countries. Our post for NRI brides explains how ordering works across time zones.

Getting the outfits to Mauritius

We make every outfit in India and ship it worldwide, or you collect it from our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram before you travel. No one from our team travels with you, so try each look on at home and teach the person helping you how every dupatta pins. Check your airline's rules for carrying a bridal lehenga and the customs rules of the countries involved, as they change and differ.

How to order

Message us on WhatsApp +91 92896 79666 with your dates and your list of functions. Our designer plans everything with you on video call or at the store, guides you through your measurements, and shows you the price before anything is cut. Payment is in full in advance. Our karigars embroider each piece to your measurements, and we leave extra margin in the seams so a tailor near you can make final adjustments; if you are in India before the wedding, come in for a trial. You get a delivery date once the design is approved. If we ship to you abroad, you pay your own country's customs duty and import taxes on arrival.
