Destination Wedding in Mussoorie: Bridal Looks for the Hills

Lilac Fish Cut Lehenga from House of Daisy

A destination wedding in Mussoorie has a romance all its own: old colonial-era cottages and churches, deodar forests, terraces looking out over the valley, and clouds that roll in and out of the frame within minutes. It is a hill-station wedding in the truest sense, which means cool air, misty light and walks up and down slopes between functions. The outfits that work here are warm, rich in colour and easy to move in.

Colour in mist and cloud

Mussoorie's light is soft and often grey-blue when the clouds come in. Pale, washed-out colours can fade into it, while saturated ones glow.

  • Jewel tones: emerald, sapphire, ruby, plum and deep wine look rich against the mist and the dark green of the deodars.

  • Lilac and dusty rose: lovely for a daytime function on a sunny terrace, with silver or rose-gold work that picks up the light.

  • Classic red: warm and striking on a mountain backdrop for the pheras.

  • Ivory with velvet: an ivory lehenga with a deep-coloured velvet jacket or cape looks elegant in the cold.

A mountain wedding dress for the bride

A mountain wedding dress for the bride should keep her warm without hiding the outfit under a borrowed shawl. Plan the layers into the design from the start.

  • Velvet and raw silk: warm, rich bases that hold heavy work well. Velvet in a deep jewel tone is a natural hill-station choice.

  • Full-sleeve blouses: embroidered sleeves that are part of the look.

  • Capes and jackets: a long embroidered cape over a lehenga or gown, or a short jacket for the sangeet.

  • A matching shawl or second dupatta: a warm wool dupatta, embroidered to match, can be draped over the shoulders while the sheer bridal dupatta stays on your head.

  • Kashmiri tilla and aari work: embroidery that belongs on warm fabrics. See our Kashmiri bridal lehenga post.

Slopes, steps and fish-cut silhouettes

Hill venues often mean steps and sloping paths. Keep long trails short or detachable, and have your hem measured with the shoes you will wear. A fish-cut lehenga, fitted through the hips and flaring below the knee, photographs beautifully on a terrace with a view, but plan enough flare at the hem so you can manage steps. Our karigars can keep the heaviest work on the lower skirt so it falls well.

The functions

  • Welcome dinner: a velvet gown with a cape, or an Indo-western set with an embroidered jacket.

  • Haldi on a sunny morning: a yellow cotton-silk set with a shrug, since mornings can be cold.

  • Mehndi: a lilac or rose lehenga with full sleeves, or an anarkali.

  • Sangeet or cocktail: sequins, a long gown or a cocktail dress with a jacket. See our cocktail party dress guide.

  • The wedding: your bridal lehenga in velvet or silk, with a warm layer planned in.

  • A church blessing: some couples include a ceremony in one of the town's old churches. We make white and ivory gowns made to your measurements.

Weather in Mussoorie

Mussoorie is cool much of the year and cold in winter, with snow on some winter days. Summer and the months after the monsoon are popular for weddings, though evenings stay cool. The monsoon brings heavy rain and thick cloud. Check the forecast for your dates. Our winter wedding lehenga post covers fabrics and layering, and the nearby valley is covered in our guide to a destination wedding in Dehradun.
