A designer consultation fee is something many brides wonder about before booking a first meeting: will the conversation cost money, and what does it actually cover? Practices differ from designer to designer, so it is worth asking before you go. At House of Daisy, an independent Indian designer label from Gurugram, the first design consultation is free, whether you visit our Golf Course Road store or join on a video call.
What a design consultation covers
A consultation is a working session, not a showroom visit. In a good one, the designer:
Listens to the functions you have, the setting for each, and what you want to feel when you wear the outfit.
Looks through your references and asks what draws you to each one.
Shows fabrics, colours and embroidery techniques that suit your ideas.
Talks through silhouette, blouse, dupatta and any family pieces you want to include.
Explains the next steps, from the sketch to the trial.
For a step-by-step picture of the meeting itself, read our guide to the bridal consultation.
Why some designers charge a fee
A fashion designer consultation fee usually exists because the session takes the designer's own time: an hour or more of attention, sometimes swatches pulled from the fabric store, sometimes early drawings. Some designers charge a flat fee; some set it against the order if you go ahead; some do not charge at all. None of these is wrong. What matters is that you know which applies before you book.
A fee can also shape the conversation. When a meeting is paid for, some brides feel they must decide on the spot; when it is free, some feel they are only browsing. Neither should be true. A first consultation is for exploring ideas and seeing whether you and the designer understand each other, and you should leave it with a clearer picture, not a sense of obligation.
Questions to ask about a bridal consultation fee
Is there a fee for the first meeting, and for later ones?
What does it include: the conversation only, fabric swatches, a sketch?
If you place the order, is the fee adjusted against it?
Is a video consultation treated the same as one in the store?
Who will you be speaking to: the designer, or a member of the sales team?
If the answers are vague, ask again. A clear answer about a small fee often says a lot about how clearly the larger order will be handled. More questions worth taking into any first meeting are in questions to ask a fashion designer.
What is free with us, and what comes next
Your first design consultation with us is free, in the store or on video call or WhatsApp video. You speak with our designer, Bhumika Sehgal, about your functions, your references and any family pieces. If you decide to go ahead, the steps follow in a fixed order:
Bhumika gives you a sketch of the outfit to approve before anything is cut.
The designer shows you the price before anything is cut.
Payment is in full in advance.
Our karigars embroider the outfit to your measurements.
Nothing is cut and nothing is charged for the outfit until you have seen both the sketch and the cost.
How to make the most of a free consultation
Bring references: pictures, a Pinterest board, even AI images. Our guide to bridal lehenga references shows what helps most.
Know your functions: the dates, day or night, indoors or outdoors.
Bring family pieces you want to include, or clear photos of them.
Bring one person whose opinion you trust. A crowd makes decisions harder.
From abroad: join from a quiet room with good daylight, and check the time zone when you book. Our guide to the video call lehenga explains the rest.
