Bridal trousseau shopping in Delhi can be wonderful or exhausting, and the difference is almost always the plan. Delhi and Gurgaon between them have old textile markets, designer areas, malls and studios that make clothes to measure, so you can find almost anything. The trick is knowing what to buy ready, what to have made, and in what order. Here is a practical way to do it.
Start with a written list
Before your first shopping day, write a bridal trousseau shopping list with three columns: the occasion, the outfit, and whether you will buy it, have it made or use something you already own. Our bridal trousseau list gives you the full set of outfits to start from. Then:
Mark the pieces that need the most time, usually the bridal lehenga, the reception outfit and any heavily embroidered sarees. These come first.
Group the rest by type, such as sarees, suits, Indo-western and accessories, so each shopping day has one focus.
Set your colour story: two or three main colours so jewellery and blouses can be shared.
Know what each part of the city is for
Every area has its own character. In general terms:
Old Delhi's markets around Chandni Chowk are known for fabric, lace, borders, trims and wedding accessories. Go early, go with a list, and take someone who knows the lanes.
Karol Bagh and Lajpat Nagar are busy markets with a wide range of suits, sarees and accessories.
Shahpur Jat and the South Delhi areas have many designer studios and boutiques.
Gurgaon, including Golf Course Road, has malls and studios that design and make outfits to measure.

Buy ready, or have it made?
Some pieces are easy to buy ready: everyday suits, accessories, footwear and simple sarees. Others are worth having made to your measurements:
The bridal lehenga and reception outfit, because fit, weight and embroidery matter most here.
Blouses for every saree in the trousseau. A saree is only as good as its blouse. See our post on designer blouse stitching.
Sarees with a personal touch, such as your initials, the wedding date or a family motif in the border.
Anything for a non-standard need: a dupatta length for a particular drape, a skirt that clears the floor for a destination venue, or a blouse with more coverage for a family function.
Shopping day checklist
Reference pictures saved in one album on your phone, by function.
Fabric swatches or photos of outfits already bought, so colours do not clash.
A well-fitting blouse of your own, which helps whoever stitches your new blouses.
The right shoes if you are trying on lehengas, so the length is right.
Comfortable clothes that are easy to change in and out of.
One honest companion, not five opinions.
Timing your shopping days
Leave the heaviest pieces the most time, and shop for lighter pieces once the main colours are set. Avoid squeezing everything into the last weeks before the wedding, when markets are often crowded and every studio is busy. Our guide to the right time for wedding shopping in India covers the seasons in more detail. If you live abroad and have one short trip to India, do the design work on video call before you land, so your trip is for trials, not first conversations.
