The doli is one of the most emotional images of an Indian wedding: the bride carried away from her parents' home at the vidaai. A bridal lehenga with a doli design puts that scene into the embroidery, usually as part of a procession that runs around the border with the baraat, the dhol, the horse and the shehnai.
What a doli scene can include
The doli itself, carried by kahars, with the bride's hand or veil just visible.
The baraat: the groom on a horse or elephant, musicians with dhol and shehnai, dancing relatives.
The welcome: a decorated gate, toran, diyas and marigolds.
Your own touches: your family home, your city, your parents waving goodbye.
Where it works best
As a border procession
The scene runs along the hem, so the baraat literally travels round the lehenga as you move. This is the classic placement.
On the dupatta
A doli in each corner, or one procession along the dupatta border. Pair it with your names or the wedding date (see bridal dupatta with name).
In the kalis
One part of the procession in each panel: the baraat arriving, the pheras, the vidaai.
As a small detail
A single doli on a latkan or the blouse back, for brides who want the meaning without a big scene.
Design tips
Keep the palette rich. Gold zardozi or dabka figures on a red, maroon or green base look like heirloom miniature paintings.
Leave breathing space. A procession needs a clear band; crowding it with flowers on all sides hides the story.
Think about the vidaai mood. Some families prefer the joyful baraat and pheras to the tearful vidaai. Choose the moments that feel right to you.
Add the figures you love. The couple can also appear on their own. Read dulha dulhan embroidery design.
How it is made
Our designer draws the scene to the size of your lehenga, and you see the placement and the price before anything is cut. The lehenga is made to your measurements, payment is in full in advance, and our own karigars embroider the figures and scenes in-house. A full procession is detailed work, so the designer gives you a delivery date once the design is approved. Start early.
