A beach wedding in Alibaug feels close to home for many families from Mumbai and Pune, yet it has everything a destination wedding needs: coconut palms, sea air, open lawns and long evenings by the water. The bride's outfits should be planned for that coastal setting, which is humid for most of the year and breezy near the shore. This guide walks through the functions, the fabrics and the Maharashtrian craft ideas that suit the Konkan coast.
The coastal climate, in practical terms
Many couples avoid the monsoon months on this coast, when rain can be heavy, and plan for the cooler, drier part of the year instead. Even then, afternoons are usually warm and the air is damp. Check the forecast for your dates, and plan for:
Breathable fabric for daytime functions: cotton, mulmul, chanderi, georgette and organza rather than velvet or heavy brocade.
A secure dupatta for anything by the water, because a sea breeze will lift it.
A hem that clears the ground, since lawns can be damp in the evening and beaches are sandy.
A light shawl or cape for late nights, which can feel cool after a warm day.
Ideas from the Konkan coast
Alibaug sits in Maharashtra, and its own textile traditions give a bride lovely reasons to look local rather than generic.
A Paithani-inspired saree: rich colours such as peacock blue, parrot green or deep magenta, with peacock and lotus motifs on the pallu and border. Our karigars can embroider these motifs on silk or organza; see our peacock theme bridal lehenga post for more on how the motif is laid out.
The nauvari drape: if the family is Maharashtrian, many brides wear the nine-yard drape for the ceremony. We make the saree and the blouse to your measurements; plan for someone in the family who knows the drape to help you on the day, and practise once at home.
Green for the haldi: green is a much-loved colour in many Maharashtrian weddings. A green and yellow haldi set looks fresh against white sand and palms.
Coastal motifs: waves, fish scales worked as a pattern in sequin, or a scalloped border that echoes the tide line.
Outfits, function by function
Haldi: a cotton or mulmul set, or a simple saree, in yellow, green or white, with short sleeves.
Mehndi: a sharara or a light anarkali with gota or mirror work. Elbow-length sleeves keep the henna clear.
Sangeet: a crop-top lehenga with a flared, lighter skirt, or an Indo-western set with a cape, so you can dance on grass without tripping.
Pool or beach party: a co-ord set, a short dress or a dhoti-style set in bright colours.
Wedding ceremony: a bridal lehenga in organza, georgette or light raw silk, or a silk saree. Read our guide to the beach wedding lehenga for how we keep the embroidery rich and the skirt light.
Reception: a gown, a sequin saree or a saree drape for the evening. Our post on the beach wedding reception dress for the bride has more ideas.
Planning a beach side wedding in Alibaug with an outfit change
For a beach side wedding in Alibaug, many brides wear a traditional saree or nauvari for the rituals and change into a lehenga or gown for photographs and the evening. If you plan to do this, tell our designer at the start so both outfits are designed as a pair: the colours sit well together, the jewellery works with both, and the second outfit is quick to put on. Our guide to the Indian wedding outfit change covers timing and how to choose the two looks.
Getting the outfits there
We design and make your outfits, then ship them to your home, in India or abroad, or you collect them at our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram before you leave. No one from our team travels to the wedding, so keep a small kit with you: dupatta pins, safety pins, a travel steamer and a cotton cloth to sit on during photographs. Hang every outfit as soon as you arrive so the creases relax in the sea air.
How to order
Message us on WhatsApp +91 92896 79666 with your wedding dates, the functions and anything that inspires you: a family Paithani, a Pinterest board or a photo of your mother's wedding saree. If you are abroad, the whole design conversation happens on video call and WhatsApp video. Our designer shows you the price before anything is cut, and gives you a delivery date once the design is approved. Payment is in full in advance. Our karigars embroider each piece to your measurements, which the designer takes with you on a video call or at a trial in the store, and we leave extra margin in the seams for final adjustments by a tailor near you. If we ship abroad, customs duty and import taxes in your country are yours to pay on arrival.
