An Indian wedding in Thailand brings together two cultures that both love gold, flowers and celebration. Thailand's beaches, islands and temples make a beautiful backdrop for a multi-day wedding, and many Indian families find the warmth of the welcome matches their own. For the bride, the planning starts with heat, humidity and which part of the country you choose.
Where, and when
An Indian destination wedding in Thailand usually happens in one of three kinds of place:
The southern islands and beaches: Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui, with beachfront lawns, cliff terraces and pool decks.
Coastal towns nearer Bangkok: such as Hua Hin, for families who want an easier trip for older relatives.
The north: Chiang Mai and its hills, with gardens and cooler evenings.
Thailand is often described as having a cooler, drier stretch from around November to February, a hot season after it, and a rainy season that falls at different times on different coasts. Many couples choose the cooler months. Weather varies, so check the forecast for your exact dates and region, and plan a covered option for every outdoor function.
A Phuket Indian wedding, function by function
A Phuket Indian wedding is a good example of how a beach weekend usually runs:
Welcome party on the beach: a gown, co-ord or Indo-western cape set in a light fabric; see our bride dress for pool party post for relaxed looks.
Haldi and mehndi by the pool: cotton silk, georgette or chanderi shararas and light lehengas.
Sangeet: a net lehenga or gown with sequins for an evening under lights.
Pheras at sunset: your bridal lehenga or saree, planned for heat, sand and wind.
Reception: a gown or saree drape with shine, often indoors with air-conditioning.
In Chiang Mai, evenings can be cool in the drier months, so add a jacket or full sleeves to night outfits.
Fabrics for heat and humidity
Thai heat is humid, and dense fabric feels heavier by the hour. For the bridal lehenga, choose organza, net, georgette or light raw silk, with a breathable lining and a light cancan. Keep the heaviest embroidery on the border, blouse and dupatta. Our summer destination wedding dress guide covers fabrics and construction for hot weather in more detail, and our beach wedding lehenga post covers hems and dupattas on the sand.
Colours and motifs inspired by Thailand
Thailand is full of ideas for a bridal palette and embroidery:
Temple gold: gold zari on deep red or wine for the wedding, which glows at sunset.
Orchids: orchid sprays in pink, purple and white for a mehndi lehenga or dupatta border.
Elephants: a well-loved symbol in both Thailand and India. Our karigars can work elephants into a border or dupatta; see our elephant motif lehenga ideas.
Silk sheen: Thailand is known for its silk. A lustrous raw silk or a silk with a soft sheen nods to that for the reception.
Andaman blues: aqua, turquoise and teal for a beach function.
What to avoid
Velvet and heavy brocade for outdoor functions; keep them for an air-conditioned reception, if at all.
Long trails on beaches and wet lawns.
Pale silks at a haldi, where turmeric stains.
Packing outfits in sealed plastic; use breathable garment bags in humid air.
Getting your outfits there
We ship worldwide, so your outfits can reach your home before you leave, or you can collect them at our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram before you travel. If they are shipped to you outside India, you pay your own country's customs duty and import taxes on arrival; our lehenga international shipping guide explains how it works. Check your airline's rules and Thailand's customs website before you fly with them. We do not send anyone to dress you at the wedding, so practise each look at home with your helper.
How to order
Message us on WhatsApp +91 92896 79666 with your region, dates, functions and references. We plan everything on video call, and the designer shows you the price before anything is cut. Payment is in full in advance. Measurements are guided on video, or taken at a trial in our store if you are in India, with extra seam margin for a tailor near you. Our karigars embroider each piece, and the designer gives a delivery date once the design is approved, so start early.
