An Indian destination wedding in Sri Lanka can feel close to home and far away at once. Many ceremonies, flowers and foods are familiar, yet the setting is all its own: palm-lined beaches, old fort towns, misty tea estates and temples with elephants. The island also has two monsoons that reach different coasts at different times, which affects what you wear. Here is how we plan a bride's outfits for it.
Coast or hill country
The south and west coast: beaches, palms and the old walled town of Galle, with its ramparts, lighthouse and colonial streets. Warm and humid, with sand underfoot at most beach functions.
The east coast: quieter beaches that are often at their driest when the west coast is wet.
Kandy and the tea country: green hills, lakes and estates. Cooler, often misty, with chilly evenings higher up.
Because the monsoons reach the west and the east at different times of year, the right coast depends on your dates. Check the forecast for your exact region and dates before you choose fabrics, and plan one warm layer if any function is in the hills.
Silks, borders and drapes to borrow
Sri Lanka shares a love of silk and temple-style borders with South India. A silk lehenga with a deep zari border, or a silk saree for the ceremony, feels natural there; our post on South Indian bridal lehenga designs has ideas for borders and colours. The Kandyan saree drape, with its neat pleated frill at the waist, is a lovely reference for a reception saree; bring a picture of the drape you like and our designer will plan the saree and blouse around it. Temple elephants, lotus flowers and palm fronds make natural motifs, and our karigars can place them on a border or a dupatta. See our elephant motif lehenga post for how that can look.
Fabric and weight for the climate
Beach functions: georgette, organza, chiffon, mul and light silk, with embroidery concentrated on the blouse and dupatta.
Hill country: richer silk or a light velvet jacket for the evening; a shawl or cape you can wear in photos.
Rain: if your dates fall near a monsoon, choose fabrics that dry quickly and keep hems off the ground. Our post on monsoon bridal outfits goes into detail.
Sand: no long trails or heavy can-can on the beach; ankle length works.
Function by function
Welcome evening: a gown or an Indo-western cape set for a fort-town terrace or a beach dinner.
Haldi: yellow cotton or mul, simple and stain-friendly.
Mehndi: a short-sleeved crop-top lehenga or a sharara in parrot green, marigold or coral.
Sangeet: mirror work and sequins for an evening by the sea.
Wedding: a silk or organza bridal lehenga, or a silk saree, in red, maroon, ivory and gold or temple green.
Reception: a saree in a Kandyan-inspired drape, a gown, or a second lighter lehenga.

Getting the outfits to Sri Lanka
We make every outfit in India and ship it worldwide, or you collect it from our Golf Course Road store in Gurugram before you travel. Nobody from our team travels with you, so rehearse each look at home, photograph how each dupatta and saree is pinned, and share those pictures with whoever will help you dress. Check your airline's rules for carrying a bridal lehenga and the customs rules of the countries involved, as they change.
How to order
Message us on WhatsApp +91 92896 79666 with your region, dates and functions. Our designer plans with you on video call or at the store, guides you through your measurements, and shows you the price before anything is cut. Payment is in full in advance. Our karigars embroider each outfit to your measurements, and we leave extra margin in the seams so a tailor near you can make final adjustments; if you are in India before the wedding, you can have a trial at the store. The designer gives you a delivery date once the design is approved. If we ship to you abroad, you pay your own country's customs duty and import taxes on arrival.
