Buying in the US versus designing with India

Search for Indian designer brands in USA listings and you will find plenty of names and stockists. This guide is not a list. It is about a different route: working directly with a designer in India, so the outfit starts from your ideas rather than from what has been shipped over in standard sizes. Most indian designers in USA searches lead to finished pieces; a designer in India can draw something that exists only for you, then have karigars embroider it to your measurements.

Making the time difference work

India is many hours ahead of the US, which sounds awkward but is easy to plan around.

• East Coast: an evening slot in India usually falls in your morning, so a call before work suits both sides.

• Central and Mountain time: an early-morning call for you meets India's late evening, or try a weekend.

• West Coast: your evening is India's morning, so an after-dinner call works well.

Between calls, keep one WhatsApp chat for the outfit. Send references, photos and voice notes whenever it suits you, and replies will be waiting when you wake.

Dressing for an American wedding season

The US is big enough that the same date can mean very different weather. A summer wedding outdoors in the South or the Southwest often calls for breathable georgette, organza or net, with embroidery placed rather than spread everywhere, and a lighter dupatta. An autumn or winter wedding in the Northeast or the Midwest is often indoors in a hotel ballroom, which suits raw silk or velvet, fuller sleeves and a shawl-style dupatta for arriving and leaving. Banquet halls are frequently air-conditioned, so a light layer for the reception can help. Check the forecast for your dates and share it with the designer.

Many couples in the US bring two traditions together: a Hindu or Sikh ceremony and a white-dress ceremony, or a Gujarati or Punjabi wedding with an American reception. She guides you through your measurements on camera, and we leave extra margin in the seams so an alterations tailor near you can make final adjustments. Shipping, customs and carrying it yourself

We ship to the USA. When the parcel arrives, you pay US customs duty and any import charges; we do not. Rules and charges change, and they depend on things like the declared value and the type of fabric, so check the US customs website before you order. 3. Confirm: you see the price before anything is cut, and payment is in full in advance.

4. Making: our karigars embroider it, made to the measurements you took with our designer on video.

5. Shipping or trial: we ship to your US address, or you have a trial at the store when you land in India. You get a delivery date once the design is approved.
