To buy sarees online from India while you live abroad, sort out the blouse, the finishing and the drape before the saree leaves India, because fixing them later, far from a familiar tailor, is much harder. What does the blouse piece mean, and should I get it stitched?
Most sarees come with a length of blouse fabric, either attached at one end or as a separate piece. It is fabric, not a blouse. Abroad, finding a tailor who understands a saree blouse can take time, so many women prefer to have it stitched in India before dispatch.
With us, a ready saree comes with an unstitched blouse piece, and we stitch it to your measurements on request, usually in about a week. You can send your measurements, and we can guide you through taking them on a video call.
What are fall and pico, and do I need them?
- Fall is a strip of fabric stitched along the inside of the lower border. It gives the hem weight, helps the pleats sit and protects the edge from wear.
- Pico is the fine finishing along the raw edges, often the pallu and the top edge, so they do not fray.
Many sarees arrive without either, so ask the store what is already done. If you are unsure, ask before you pay rather than discovering it on the day you want to wear it.
How long should the saree be?
Listings usually give the saree length and the blouse length together. A standard length suits most drapes, but if you are tall, wear very high heels or like a generous pallu, ask for the exact length without the blouse piece. If you plan a regional drape, check the length that drape needs, as some need more fabric than others.
What if I am not confident about draping?
You are far from alone. A ready-to-wear or pre-draped saree slips on with the pleats already in place, which is a gift when you are dressing in a hotel room or at a family home with ten people waiting. How do payment, customs and shipping work?
Our orders are prepaid online, from India and abroad; there is no cash on delivery. When the parcel reaches your country, you pay any customs and import duty on arrival, under your country's rules. Rates and times vary from country to country and change over time, so check your own country's guidance. Ask us about returns and exchanges on WhatsApp before you order.
Can I see the saree before it ships?
Yes. A screen can shift a colour, and a still photo hides how a saree flows. You can see our ready pieces on a live WhatsApp video call from the showroom, held up in daylight and moved so you can see the fall. If you need something made, a festive or party outfit made to order should be planned three to four weeks ahead. Pieces we make to order are made to your measurements and hand-embroidered in our atelier.
