A destination wedding in Coorg is green, misty and quiet in a way few places are. Coffee and spice estates roll over the hills, the light is soft for most of the day, and the evenings turn cool. The bride's outfits need to suit that setting: rich silk, colours that glow without shouting, and layers for the night air. Here is how we would plan the wardrobe.
The weather, and why it shapes everything
Coorg, or Kodagu, sits high in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Many couples avoid the main monsoon months, when rain is usually heavy, and choose the cooler, drier part of the year. Even then, mornings can be misty and nights chilly. Check the forecast for your dates and plan for:
Damp grass: estate lawns and garden paths are often wet in the morning and evening. Keep every hem just off the ground.
Cool evenings: a full-sleeve blouse, a jacket or a cape for night functions, and a shawl you are happy to be photographed in.
Soft light: mist and shade flatten very pale colours. Choose richer tones or add gold and silver to lift them.
If your dates fall in the rains, read our guide to monsoon bridal outfits for fabrics that cope with damp air.
Silk for the ceremony
Karnataka is silk country, and a silk saree is a natural choice for a wedding ceremony here, whether the family is from the region or not. Our karigars can embroider a silk saree with a temple-style border, a zari pallu, or your initials and wedding date hidden in the border. A silk lehenga with a temple border is another lovely option if you want the feel of a South Indian silk with the shape of a lehenga. See our South Indian bridal lehenga designs for ideas.
If you have your mother's or grandmother's silk saree, it can be part of the wedding too. We restore and strengthen old sarees, and the designer will look at yours first and tell you honestly what can be saved. It can be worn as it is, or reworked; our post on how to convert a silk saree into a lehenga explains the options.
The Kodava-style drape
Many Kodava families have their own way of draping the saree, with the pleats tucked at the back and the pallu brought over the shoulder and pinned. If the family is Kodava, or you simply love the look, tell our designer at the start. The drape changes where the border and pallu embroidery should sit, so the saree is planned for it from the first sketch. Ask someone in the family who knows the drape to help you on the day, and practise once before the wedding.
Colours from the estates
Forest and emerald green, which belong in this landscape, with gold zari.
Coffee, rust and copper for evening functions, with antique-gold embroidery.
Deep red and maroon for the ceremony, the classic bridal choice.
Peach, mint and powder blue for daytime functions, lifted with silver or gold so they do not look grey in misty light.
Motifs can come from the estates too: coffee blossom, pepper vines and cardamom leaves worked as a border or scattered across a dupatta.
Outfits for the other functions
Welcome evening: a gown or a light lehenga with a cape for warmth.
Haldi or mehndi: a cotton or chanderi set, or a sharara, with a hem that clears the grass.
Sangeet: a lehenga with a lighter skirt or an Indo-western set, with a jacket you can take off once the dancing starts.
Reception: a velvet or silk gown, or a saree drape with a structured blouse.
