Auckland greets each new day before almost anywhere else in the world, and by the time Gurugram wakes up, your afternoon is well under way. For a bride designing a bridal lehenga in Auckland, that head start is worth knowing about. So is the city's famously mixed weather, which can bring sun, a shower and a stiff harbour wind in the space of one reception.
Designing when you are hours ahead
New Zealand is six and a half hours ahead of India, and seven and a half during daylight saving. Our Gurugram store opens around your late afternoon or early evening and stays open well into your night, so calls fit neatly after work, once dinner is done. Weekends are easier still.
The free 30-minute consultation is a video chat, on WhatsApp or whichever video app you prefer. Relatives in India can join during their working day while you sit on the sofa at home, and anyone in Fiji, Australia or elsewhere can drop in too. Our post on the video call lehenga explains how those calls work.
Many traditions under one roof
Auckland's Indian community is wonderfully varied. Alongside families from Punjab, Gujarat and the South, the city is home to many Indo-Fijian families whose wedding customs grew from those their ancestors carried from India generations ago, with their own songs, foods and ways of celebrating. Weddings here might move from a temple or gurdwara to a community hall, a garden or a vineyard on one of the islands in the gulf.
There is no single right way to plan a bridal lehenga in Auckland for that mix. Some brides marry in a saree and change into a lehenga at night; others want a lehenga for everything and a gown for the after-party. Our post on a bride dress for a cocktail party has ideas for the lighter evening. If a sacred line matters to your family, it belongs on the dupatta only, with the words checked by your elder, priest or granthi.
A bridal lehenga in Auckland that showers will not spoil
Auckland is mild and humid for much of the year, rarely truly hot or truly cold, but rain can turn up in any season and the wind off the water is often brisk. So build in flexibility:
Choose fabric that forgives a damp day. Raw silk, georgette and net cope better than very delicate tissue.
Keep the hem clear of wet grass and the can-can soft enough to lift easily.
Plan a warm layer. A velvet dupatta or a fitted jacket-style blouse helps on a cool, windy evening.
Pin the dupatta well if your photos are by the harbour or on a hilltop.
Our karigars embroider in zardozi, thread work, mirror work and pearls, and the designer can balance the weight so you stay comfortable through a long day.
Seasons the other way round
India's wedding season falls in your summer. If you are flying home for a winter wedding in the north, you will leave warm Auckland for cold mornings and chilly evenings, so think about full sleeves or a velvet shawl for the night functions. Our guide for NRI brides helps with planning both ends of the trip.
How to order from Auckland
Kick things off with a WhatsApp to +91 92896 79666 covering the wedding date, the functions you have in mind and their venues, in New Zealand or in India. Book the free consultation on video, or visit the store if you are passing through Gurugram, where you can also have a trial and alterations. The designer draws your bridal lehenga and tells you the cost; you approve, pay the full amount, and only then is the fabric cut. You measure yourself at home as the designer walks you through it over video, and we leave generous seam allowance so an Auckland tailor can perfect the fit. Photos arrive as the work progresses. The delivery date is fixed at approval, and a heavily worked lehenga tends to need about eight weeks beyond that point, so an early start pays off.
We ship worldwide. When it reaches New Zealand, duty and import taxes are your responsibility, and the country is careful about what crosses its border, so check the New Zealand Customs Service website before it is sent. See our lehenga international shipping guide and our wider bridal lehenga New Zealand post.
